38k mile service cost?

Post by murph7355 » Tue Feb 04, 2014 11:27 pm

Anyone had any recent experience of a 38k mile service and prepared to share what they paid?

Opening main dealer quote is £530 quid (including air and pollen filters and the necessary parts). Am just finding out how much of that cost is oil as I suspect there's likely to be a bit of a loading on that.

This is a main dealer in the South East.

Have also asked them to tentatively quote for brake discs and pads front and rear as I suspect at least one end needs doing (the joys of a b-road commute :)). Their parts price is close to Stoke Audi, but there's a big discrepancy in the front and rear comparison (fronts more expensive, rears a good chunk less), which I thought odd.

Any head up on service costs would be appreciated.

Half of it's parts.

Ignoring the prospective hourly rate assuming it is only an hour, two key reasons for considering this route:

1) The car has full Audi Service history to date...not something I'm wedded to if the difference in full cost is significant but....

2) They're not that far from me....the cost at the nearest "known" (to me anyway - AMD?) specialist is £474. And it'd cost me £25 extra in fuel. If I can save £30 on oil at the main dealer, I'm within spitting distance of the same cost.

Oil,oil filter, pollen filter, air filter is £150 -160 don't kid yourself otherwise, audi like to charge double what you can easily buy it at from the likes of opie oils or even halfords,I'd recommend doing plugs as 7 year old and presumably short runs @ 38k miles they've gotta be past there best, would of thought the 40k service would take a couple of hours rather than an 1 but even so paying over 150 an hour for basic maintenance........... :audibash:

The car's actually done 76k miles and does 50 miles a day min (25mls each way). I'd assumed this service is a "full" one.

Price at an Indie as noted doesn't seem too far off, unless people have other suggestions in the same locale....?

Doing it myself unfortunately isn't an option - time poor.

Noting the prices of the parts has given me another idea though...

If it's done 76k then it should be getting its second set of plugs I think,if it includes plugs it's not a bad price as there expensive, pollen is usually only done if you ask, presuming anything is a dangerous game with any dealer,I've come across many problems even after clear clarification at the outset of what's getting done,if you ring and ask for a 80k service to 3 different dealers I'm pretty sure you will get 3 differing stories and prices, best bet is go back through what your cars had and is actually due and ask for that work specifically, the intervals of the items are in it's service book.

Agree with Lengster, I got a few different stories on what my car required but after I setting them all straight on what I wanted and required, we managed to get an even playing field.

Harwoods Audi in 5 Oaks did mine in the end, I can't remember if I got them to price match another local dealer or if they were just the cheapest after phoning around but the price I ended up with was £339.74 inc VAT. This gave me:

Service (using my own supplied oil)
Visual Inspection
Oil Filter
Washer
Air Filter
Pollen Filter (at my request)
Spark Plugs - supplied only as I fitted them myself which I detailed in the FAQ section at the top

The 10 litres of oil required was £65 delivered from Opie Oils (they currently have 20% off everything)

I also got the dealer to price match a local aircon specialist to service, deodorised using an antibacterial agent and recharge the air conditioning for £79 inc VAT.
Sepang Blue B8 RS4, MY14, All option packs, B&O, Adv Key, Adapt Cruise, Pan Roof, Akrapovic Titanium Exhaust, + more.
Previous - Sprint Blue B7 RS4 Avant, Ceramics, Sunroof, SS+, Buckets, FBSW, Bluetooth, 2010+ RNSe
Previous - Phantom Black B7 RS4 Avant, Black Optics, Titan pack, SS+, Buckets, FBSW

I didn't bother even getting quotes from main stealer, due to past experience in my mind of being excessively charged for relatively poor workmanship.

Car has just covered 26,000 and had long life service last year, but is getting on for 7 years old now. I have always been a believer of annual servicing, regardless of its usage.

I supplied oil, oil filter, air filter, pollen filter and spark plugs, all parts cost me £190.

The garage that I have used for more years than I like to remember also did a full 52 point inspection and MOT, all for the some of £160 including VAT.

Shop about, you can get value for money.

Mine came off the Longlife regime when I purchased it and went to Camberley to move the service over to interval. It had 40K exactly on the clock and here's what I had done:

Visual Inspection
Service
Oil Filter
Washer
Drain Plug
Screen wash (£2.67)
Pollen Filter (it was due and at £13.35 ex VAT was hardly worth not doing)
x8 Spark Plugs fitted
Brake fluid service
Air con recharge and deodorised using an antibacterial agent, all refrigerant and UV and recharge the air conditioning
£568.70 Inc VAT

I supplied oil from Opie - Titan Race Pro S 10ltrs - £87.79

Air Filter - I purchased a K&N and fitted this myself so a saving in the long run. So £43.00
Gone but never forgotten:
2007 RS4 B7 Saloon, Metallic Silver with SS+.
LED's all round and Dectane LED tailights. KDS detail and paint. Lepsons black chrome, heavy on the silver wheels. JCWeldFab full system - valved and no pre-cats. MRC stage 2, de-flap and full carbon clean - 438PS and 489NM. HEL brake lines. H&R Spacers. Gtechniq C1 and EXO V2 coatings. 2010+ RNS-E. On the MRC dyno: http://youtu.be/y_k0VJ2--y8

To close this one off (for me anyway) The final bill was just over £300 (plus the cost of my own oil - so £370 or so in total).

It had the brake fluid changed (not originally quoted for), but plugs and pollen filter not needed per the history on the car.

Was fine with that and the customer service was top notch IMO - can recommend Chelmsford Audi (flexible, very professional and thorough and covered everything as wanted).

A generically frustrating thing is why main dealers (of any marque) insist on charging soooo much for oil. Supplying my own knocked £130 off the cost of the service. And I obviously bought my oil at retail prices, so the supplier was evidently still making a profit even at the vastly reduced amount.

I was asked if it was Audi oil...as it was in an identical bottle to the stuff on display in the showroom I noted yes it is except for the price tag being somewhat different!

(I do not hold that at Chelmsford Audi's door as I strongly suspect every main dealer will have to charge the same amount).

So...IME never get oil, screen wash or tyres from a main dealer :)
