professional full respray. ballpark price for a good job?

Post by Mr Footlong » Mon Jan 13, 2014 12:24 am

Hi guys. Not for mine but since the scoob sold today and the reliability of the cayenne turbo engines has put me off, I had a look at the for sale section and saw a starship miles c5 loon and it looked Very nice in noggy blue.

Madam fell in love with the colour on it and seriously wants me to get her a loon, that loon to be precise. The mileage puts me off big time and no mods so I would be at square one but I could buy a better example with mods and just get her resprayed for my loved one.

Going to phone my paint guys tomorrow to see but ideas from you guys would be great too thanks.

I think mines with the windows out is currently around 4.5k. That includes a new front bumper and windscreen though, any of the galvanised trim clips that are rusty are being replaced, new windscreen, new chrome trim (which is to be painted) and rolled front arches. It's still going up though and it's not completed

Dunno about the respray but that'd be cool if you bought it. Lovely looking car, and look at it this way, unmodded, means it *should* have had an easier life versus a tuned one with starship miles I reckon. Get it bought.

I would have said around £3k for a good respray on its own. Hows about ringing Greg Howell for a quote? Not actually seen any of his work in the flesh but heard lots of good things.

Mines started at 3k then got more when I started replacing bumpers and clips, pulling windows and body mods.

stay.away.from.howelling.howell!!!

Absolutely reamed my mate, painted a show winning car after giving a 2.2k in the metal quote. When the car was ready sent him an amended bill for 7.8k!

Yes...

7.8k!!!

So it's going to be better than perfect right?

Wrong!

Colour change from white to black for 8k you'd expect to be acid dipped and complete as from factory colour right?

Wrong.

But their's labour costs for stripping and rebuilding right?

Wrong! Car got supplied stripped, windows out, engine and running gear off...

but the paint was at least immaculate right???

Wrong!!! Inside of car remained white, inner arches and under floor remained white, sills weren't fully caught either, engine bay you could still see white looking in from the top

but at least the paint was flawless for 7.8k right????

Wrong!!! Bonnet needed reworked, paintwork started falling off in sheets

wow...at least he would have got it sorted right??

Wrong!!!

He'd at least have got his money back right??????

Wrong!!! Payment was negotiated down to just over 7 and had to be paid to get the car released and now fixing it at his own cost after the offer for Howellto get Iit repaired anywhere else at his cost petered out to nothing

well at least it was just a one off right??????

Wrong!!!!! After every occasion with the same circumstances the legal quiet threats were issued, police are called when it goes viral and lawsuits are started!!!

My mate nearly lost his business due to this and the financial outlay and it's not even an isolated occurrence. Evidence is there to be found on forums

Was just going to pipe in myself there, seems daz has it covered though. Unbelievable the state the car was in after he got the car back as well as what he's found bodged as he's been stripping it down again.

All this from a 'scene' superstar

@Chunk: TOLD.

Fecking bandits are everywhere. I'm always amazed at how they can build up a rep. Or do they start off good then go to the dark side at some point? Amanda might be able to comment. ;)

I know a good place in Bristol. Not convenient for you, though, Footers.

I did reply earlier but tablet thought otherwise....... Ouch, I won't be calling them up, thanks for the in-depth reply. Amar, while the noggy blue looks even nicer on that than it does on the S3 currently, I cannot get over the mileage. Even it is seemed ok, it has been to the moon and back and after mods I would be at least 10k in to a car with 200k miles on in, just doesn't sit right to me.

For 1-1.5k more I can get a mildly modded loon with less than half the miles on for madam, then put say 4k in to a good enough respray job once I find the place and have the best of both worlds.

I am also thinking that by having two, I can take one off the road for the gearbox to be done without really caring about time too much.

Shopp, PM from last night would love your input when convenient on car a vs b :).

The link on your pm did work stretch.
Well, think it might be best to leave Greg Howell alone then. As I said, not seen any of his work in the flesh and only heard good stuff, but this sounds pretty bad!

Greg Howell has a rep for amazing paint and high cost. It's the first I've heard of bad work though. The output on Doug's B5 WB 'loon was always considered excellent, that said, I've not asked his personal opinion but I do know it took faaaar too long.
No matter where you go, there you are.

Wasn't Doug selling his wife's RS6 a while back, 600BHP, big brakes front and rear and lots more. It was good value too IIRC. If I were you, and knowing you're going to mod the hell out of it anyway, I'd be getting in touch with Doug.

When my mate got ripped off and he updated his thread on edition38 several people got in touch to tell him they had the same experience and a similar job. Within hours his thread was edited by moderators and Facebook comments led to a police visit and legal threats. After more comments were added on his build thread the whole thread at one point got blackholed. It wasnt a 2 page 'ive fitted wheels and suspension to my car' this was an 80+ page chronicle of the cars journey(and his previous car as well),3.0l vrT,every stage and every mod for a show winning car that was black holed because Howell is who he is.

Doing the math if he is quadrupling quotes on 7 occasions that we know off at an average of 8k per job, turning out a rotten job then offering to let them get it resprayed anywhere at his cost(at usually around 3k)then he's coined in a minimum of 28k but even say 25k over the 7 jobs if he's even actually went through with getting the repairs done and thats a wage for some people for a year for doing nothing except waste customers money and time.

Do you want to take the risk that he'll actually do one of his proper jobs on your car?

The garage I've got my car in to get painted(outside personal experience - they painted my jetta coupe nearly 12 years ago)has proper premises(double unit, proper extracted booth etc etc), their main business is classical full restorations and receives cars from as far away as australia for paintwork. Howell paints out of a wooden shed and sleeps on bags of cash from customers he's ripped off.

:bash: :bash: :bash:

None of this is hearsay or 'my mate said this' Ive seen the e-mails back and forward and was present during some of the phone calls,I seen the work a day or so after it got delivered and theres videos of the paintwork literally falling off the car in sheets on the web for anybody willing to hunt.

Interesting insight into Howell!
Although I never thought much of his work anyway, having seen his own R32 up close as well as Dougs widebody whilst he was converting it.
