Re: Stretched tyres
Step 1. Organise rolling road day
Step 2. Invite all your mates
Step 3. Get carried away and do a top speed run for a laugh
Step 4. Assess hilarity
Step 5. Retire to public house for refreshments and banter
He did a top speed run for a laugh while having a good day with mates, are you so angelic that youve never done something daft while mucking about with mates? He got the opportunity to run it at full pelt on the rollers for no scientific need and it went pete tong, in retrospec seeing that he knew the theoretical top speed since the box got built with specific ratios it was pointless but it was done purely for a laugh.
The stretched tyres caused the blow out argument has actually reached massive amounts of coverage and the internet experts have dissected the vid micro second by micro second on a 100 different media venues even being covered on the top gear blog and its nonsense. Over stretched nankangs and arch rubbing which the net has discussed ad nauseum as being the principal contributor to the blow out are in fact toyo proxes which were well within manufacturers tolerances for design of wheel and tyre width but were only rated to 186. The title of the video should actually be 'this is what happens when you exceed your tyre ratings'. Im quite sure if he thought the tyre carcass was going to explode in the manner it did he would have rethought the whole scenario. But wheres the fun in that.
Why did he do a top speed run on the dyno?
Because why not.

Re: Stretched tyres
This isn't about me or what I have or have not done... It's a bit... well.. childish to argue that because other people have been stupid in the past it's ok to do something else stupid.
In hindsight, he was actually very lucky... Tire speed ratings isn't an exact science so could have massively damaged the tyre structure but not blown it... wouldn't have fancied being in the car after that.
Also (I don't know the specific one used) but many of the dynos I have used don't generally go to 240mph - usually rated well below that.
Whats next? see what happens (for a laugh obviously) if you pour petrol over it and light it?

Re: Stretched tyres
But Y (186mph) is usually the highest speed rating anyway for tyres and cars regularly do in excess of that without blowouts.dubbed_up_daz wrote:the principal contributor to the blow out are in fact toyo proxes which were well within manufacturers tolerances for design of wheel and tyre width but were only rated to 186. Maybe the stretch added to the risk factor?
Re: Stretched tyres
But to be fair, the owner can do what ever he wants can't he? Tis life. Nobody died, pretty sure some have come close whilst laughing at it.

Re: Stretched tyres
Which is fine - but then people shouldn't get all arsey and defensive when people point out said stupidity.

This.
It seems to be a common theme these days. Everything written on here is opinion, even facts. It's the internet, you get mad, you lose.adsgreen wrote:Which is fine - but then people shouldn't get all arsey and defensive when people point out said stupidity.

Not quite as simple as I understand it.Golfather wrote:But Y (186mph) is usually the highest speed rating anyway for tyres and cars regularly do in excess of that without blowouts.dubbed_up_daz wrote:the principal contributor to the blow out are in fact toyo proxes which were well within manufacturers tolerances for design of wheel and tyre width but were only rated to 186. Y is rated up to 186 however you need to consider the Z(X) tyres (ZR, ZY etc).
These are rated "something over 149mph" and the standard rating system doesn't directly apply. You have to take each one on a case by case basis and refer to manufacturer specifications.
Take for example the Veyron tyres - they are rated at ZR speed index.
Re: Stretched tyres
The C6 has 102Y from factory.
And regularly sits at excess of 200mph without any issues

Mmm, I'm sure it's been discussed to death elsewhere on other forums, but stretching a tyre categorically destroys the safety of it at speed
I've worked on tyre design with a few premium tyre brands and the wall is designed to take a vertical, centrifugal based load (ie support it's own rotating weight as much as a imposed car weight driven force) as soon as you stretch a tyre out of its intended shape, any centrifugal load simply become lateral rather than it's intended vertical ish plane. Any tyre will effectively tear itself apart at speed
I appreciate the whole 'euro style' that people are going for with tyre stretching, but I'm yet to drive a car with stretched tyres that doesn't handle like an absolute bag of sh1t

Same as slamming a car, it's just for looks. I don't get either, but I'm old now.

I've done it plenty of times, Not many roads where you can test anywhere near top speed.
