All fitted this afternoon - needed quite a bit of cutting and faffing with the light housing as the base of the HID bulb is a good deal thicker than a standard H7 so the retaining back had to be adjusted.

All working nice and brightly. I did take a photo halfway through so as to show the difference between old and new - but I'm getting the SQL error at present so will try and post later!

So all ready for 400 miles tomorrow! :boots: :FIREdevil:

OK - have re-awakened this thread cos I think my new issue may be related...

I am getting intermittent bulb failure warnings on the dash, but the lights are all fine. Only happens once in a while and normally goes straight off, but on my long run home last night, after several brief on/off incidents, it decided to stay on for some time....

I'm guessing that the HID's aren't drawing as much current?? If so, what's the work round? Or do I just have to ignore the warnings??

You could do what i did on a lorry when we changed the back lights to LED.

Quite simply we added another bulb in the circuit to increase the load.The extra bulbs ( left and right indicators) were
Put in a watertight box buried up in the chassis.
You couldnt even see them, but it was enough amps in the circuit to fool the flasher box to work properly.

6000k is way too blue and looks chav. You can tell a mile off its a retrofit!
4300K is standard and 5000K is max used by OEM.

You need canbus ballasts to work properly with Audi control modules otherwise you will get bulb failure warnings.
Or as suggested above, use a resistor in line with the wiring to the ballast but its a faff and not a neat solution.

Hmm - after another couple of days observation I'm beginning to doubt that it's my fog/drl's. I only get the warning when the headlights are turned on. Does anyone know a) if it actually checks the fog lights, and b) whether the DIS is checking all the time, or only when the headlights are on??

Doesn't check the foglights. Can't remember off hand what it does check. Not the side lights. I suspect only rear lights and brake lights. Not sure about headlights. You got a code in module 55?

OK - so I took the wimp's way out and actually looked in the handbook! It checks the headlights and tail lights, and separately the brake lights.

Then had a good look round car and found one tail light gone - changed bulb and all now working - not sure if the bulb was making connection on occasions or what - but now seems to be OK.

So my HID DRL's are all OK!!

I don't think bulb codes are stored on the C5.
Headlight management and bulb monitoring is contolled by relays on the relay panel.

Bad earths can also cause bulb out faults on the dash.

Plenty of modern cars use fogs as DRL's - obligatory on much of the continent.

Pretty sure the 1989 regs have been amended at least twice, and I suspect the DRL regs will have over-ridden the restrictions on fogs as per above. Can't be bothered to search!

Never been mistaken for Saxo-man in my life - anyway, isn't Saxo a stuffing for turkeys??
