Another Newbie saying hi

Post by Jas » Fri Nov 01, 2013 4:46 pm

Hello all I've been having a look on here since last sunday and the B7 RS4 buying guide has certainly helped me out no end with the 2 cars I viewed last week. I am viewing another one privately tomorrow and one at a dealer on sunday so any more tips from experienced owners will be greatly received.
A bit about me, my name is Jason I am 39yrs old and live in west Yorkshire. My previous car was a 2009 focus rs which I have already sold privately. My original plan was to save as much as possible and purchase a post 2010 M3 coupe with competition pack for my upcoming 40th in February but with the amount of finance I would need to take out to purchase a 35-37k car just isn't worth it for me at this time so I have decided to look for an RS4, I have always loved the audi rs range but never actually owned one, came very close to an S3 sportback once but I just see so many around here that I want something a little different (no offence to S3 owners by the way they are great cars)
Would you say its imperative to have a full audi main dealer service history?
What were the recalls if any?

My search for a car isn't going too well :(
1st one i looked at had the exhaust flaps didn't work, dealer said they would get the car into audi to have that rectified and call me back and no prizes for guessing what happened, yep no phone call.
2nd one i viewed was a total shed.
The private viewing i had arranged for saturday didn't go ahead as the owner didn't bring the car home from the works lock up.
Was supposed to view one now but the dealers phone is going straight to voice mail.
Shall i persevere or take the hint

First of all FON. etc etc

I'd say be patient and be prepared to travel quite widely to find the right one; there are plenty of good ones and inevitably some nails. As has been said many times before on the forum, the search facility is your friend for all things RS-related and I found excellent advice on the B7 when I was searching. I wouldn't say FASH is essential; specialist servicing and repairs can be just as good if not better. Although I didn't buy from a forum member, I would say that members' cars tend to represent amongst the best, and they turn up on here fairly frequently. Be patient and good luck.

My reasoning behind asking about the audi main dealer history is that from what i can gather the drc suspension, auxiliary rads, oil cooler are fairly naughty and i figured maybe if a car has gone into audi there maybe a better chance of those particular parts being replaced at some point. My fear is buying a car and then needing to spend 4-6k on it.
I have definitely got my eye on the classifieds that's for sure.

It depends on the independent. Someone like unit20, MRC, AmD etc will service it better than Audi and have more chance of spotting any of the known issues.

FASH vs indie is a matter of personal preference really - there are pros and cons for both.

It makes no difference whether a car has had general servicing done at Audi or indie in relation to DRC, aux rads or oil cooler - if they've gone they've gone and will need to have been replaced. Virtually no-one would do work to any of these components as general maintenance.

And I've said it before and will say it again - just because DRC hasn't gone wrong on a car doesn't mean that it necessarily will.

+1
Audi dealer history is "nice" but a mix with a recognised specialist is always good too. The thing is now days, for general servicing, there really isn't much to it. There's a lot of "checks" but the checklist is pretty short so its really limited to the basics that anybody with half a mind to do can do easily enough. Change oil, maybe brake fluid, measure discs/pads, air and pollen filters and visual inspection... There's no big secret special way of doing things - it's the more unusual jobs such as manifold replacement that you'd want somebody with a history to be able to do it.
Most cars now will be outside the 5 year / 75,000 mile "goodwill" offer from Audi so DRC is a meh.
To be honest, *any* car over 5 years and 75k miles may start showing signs of worn suspension so not unexpected to be honest. the aux rads as failures go are not too bad - £300 odd from an independent all in and whilst you are there you might as well fit a cold air feed which stops half the problem coming back.
Oil cooler is a nasty bugger and not much you can do about that.

Viewed the phantom black RS4 saloon at Tonbridge audi. Nice enough car really, easily the best out of the 3 i have looked at so far but also the most expensive by far. Car is up at 24k, 07 plate just under 50k on the clock, full audi main dealer service history, 3 of the 4 shockers were replaced in 2011, dealer has just fitted new brakes front and rear, options include sunroof, adaptive lights, 6 disc cd changer in glove box, GSM mobile phone prep in centre armrest.
Couldn't believe how different the cabin feels without the flat bottom steering wheel this car had the 3 spoke multifunction steering wheel with the sport button on the dash. The car has also changed hands many times. tax up until end of feb, dealer was adamant it had to be 24k, it just didn't make me feel like i couldn't let it slip away not at that money anyway.
