Gearbox woes........

Post by WAFWOTTBI » Fri Jul 05, 2013 6:34 am

Think i may be digging deep into my small Audi slush fund very soon, gearbox when cold, clunky change between 1st and 2nd,ok when warm,no problems when fully warmed up,can only presume this will get worse,on a particular cold morning, went into limp mode, stopped, switched off, restarted,ok,warm days,as long as not driven hard til warmed up,seems ok.........used kickdown, very loud clunk...won't be doing that again til sorted......think car will be heading north of Portsmouth to get sorted, will be firing off a few e-mails this weekend for advice/quotes,is it worth having pre-cats removed at same time ????..has a stage one map already, will it need tweaking with pre-cats removed ?????...cheers WAFFY... :blackrs4: :(

If you are having the downpipes gutted then yes your map will need tweaking, well worth doing while your box is out. Is it an MRC map currently? Sorry to hear about your box.

Out of curiosity, did you have the high revs, then slamming into gear sympton which the ATF change cured or did you change the ATF before any of that arose? Thinking my own gearbox sounds a bit "coarse" at the moment and wondering if a pre-emptive fluid change might be the way forward.

If the slamming thing happens, does it mean that not all is entirely lost if the ATC has not gone into limp mode? Wanna be sure to catch (hopefully in time) it if it does happen.

And best of luck wafwottbi with yours, hopefully not as expensive for your repairs as may be feared.

Yeah had high revs and slamming into gear on full acceleration, was really noticeable in all gears after a while, had the fluid changed and things very much improved, garage said fluid was clean that came out no contaminants, can be black sludge i was told on here bad sign! as they were reluctant to do the job i insisted on new fluid, filter, etc and it cleared the fault code

i bet you this is the fault you will find logged possibly you may be lucky though in this early stage, check with Vagcom asap!

17125 - Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off.
P0741 - 35-00 -

because of having the gearbox service done im convinced i saved the box from going into limp, where it physically gets stuck in gear and you can't move it!

i would start saving though for your slush fund £3.5k will probably be needed in the end to sort matters out long term with the gear box, reconditioned TC, however changing the fluid first would be right on my no.1 list of jobs if i was you

im local to you if your not far from portsmouth if you want a scan with Vagcom, i've got rid of my rs6 this week but still have Vagcom

Thanks for all the replys guys, car has had a yearly ATF change each year for the three years we've had her, only been in limp mode a couple of times, its when its cold, when warm not to bad, when fully warmed up you wouldn't know there was a problem.......although don't use kickdown at mo,it slams down, especially if dropping 2 gears.......so visit to Oxford looming.....got to break bad news to other half...wish me luck....although she does love the car........ :blackrs4: :(

Just a quick update on gearbox, after talking to Doud at MRC,although have been having gearbox oil changed yearly,Doug suggested putting a new oil pick up pipe in,which has now been done along with gearbox service/oil ,early days yet,car transformed, back to normal, will keep monitoring, fingers crossed........will give it a month, then i think bottle of favourite tipple heading Dougs way !!!!!!!...... :blackrs4: Waffy........

According to the guy who looks after mine, the new oil pick up pipe had a cloth/gauze filter in middle of it,so possibly after 10 years of running, mine may have been slightly or partialy blocked, running like a dream at mo,give it a few more weeks,it used to be worse in colder weather...not missing a beat at mo......fingers crossed... :blackrs4: WAFFY.......
