Broken in Spain!!!

We drove from the shire of Essex to Folkestone with no problems, from Calais to Millau with no problems and from Millau to just outside Valencia when the loudest whine, from the rear of the car, when on throttle and a grating sound when off throttle occurred The car seems to drive ok, idles fine, pulls ok and has passed a Vagcom test with no problems. I'm hoping its a wheel bearing but swerving left to right to adjust the load, doesn't seem to stop or diminish the noise. Hoping its not a diff but fearing the worst.
Peed off is an under statement, especially as its been a sublime and effortless drive and really did prove it was the right buy for me. Now drowning my sorrows in cheap red wine, €6 for some local stuff, which will no doubt give me a stoning head in the morning!
Going to gently drive it to Gandia tomorrow to a Audi dealership, rather put my trust in them than Pedro's round the corner, and see what they say.

Nightmare. Does sound like the diff, though. Not sure how long you're going to be able to drive it like that if it is. Could it be the propshaft centre bearing?

Tbh way out of my technical league, all I know is at 80mph on a motorway, my father in law could hear the whine from his car in the next lane!! I'm hoping that whatever the fix, it's not too expensive so as to curtail my fetish for nasty cheap red wine
Any ideas as to how much and how long to either replace or repair a diff would be? I'm not sure how much Spanish main dealers charge for labour but I'm thinking there has to be more reassurance using them rather than a local mechanic. The arse of it is, that our English but Spanish living friend, who is relatively local is going back to the uk on holiday, other friends who live about 30 minutes away are manically busy at the moment and with the way business has been for them recently, it would be unfair to burden them with the responsibility of dealing with this for me. So the man who can just about order beer,wine and the bill is going to give it a go!!

Just got back from the garage, rear diff is fubar'd now trying to decide whether to get it relayed home, repaired out here (approx €4000 ) or just abandon it with the keys in. Really don't know what to do and really don't know if I want to spend more money, feeling like the holiday is not going quite according to plan.

Wasn't Grizz breaking an RS 6? See if he will ship you a diff out, or have it rebuilt (if possible) that's the only way to reduce costs. I'd have it relayed, fly home, then sort it.

What would happen if you disconnected the rear propshafts and main prop?

Not sure if that would wind up the center diff or not.

Unlucky. It's an unusual failure. Must have been due to running out of oil.

I'm looking at my options and surprisingly have become confused and irrated. Confused because it looks like my rear diff has a heat sink on it, so did the Swiss Rs6 avant which was also in the garage but nobody else I've spoken to seems to know what I'm on and irrated because the cheap,<beep> windows laptop I bought to run VCDS and ekta won't fricking boot.
So in short, does the heat sink exist?

Right, it looks like the heat sink is screwed onto the diff. You can use your old one, but you'll need some new heatsink paste when you put it on the new diff (unless you get a diff that's already got one on it).

The part number for the diff appears to be: 01R 500 045K.

The part number for the heat sink is: 01R 525 079.

The heat sink paste is: G052170A2 but you can get that anywhere.
