Attaching number plate to RS4

Post by RS Owner » Tue Aug 27, 2013 9:31 am

Went out this morning to see both number plates have been removed (stolen) from my B7 Avant. I am not sure how the plates are attached, the car is not damaged otherwise so they may have been carefully removed or the plates may just come off easily.

Looking at photos of my car (when it had plates) and zooming in, I can't see any bolts! so does anyone know how the plates are attached?

wait a minute, I think I can see white bolts at the front, but not at the rear. Is there a special mounting system?

Mine were just stuck (poorly) on by Audi with double sided tape.

Yep, either screws or double sided tap/velcro

I only had a quick look this morning as I have to leave for work, I was thinking there was some fitment to the back of the plate that snapped in to the mount on the car but it could be double sided adhesive tape. Tape seems lame but the plate has stayed on for 7 years.

I am now wondering what the slags want my plates for, I have reported them stolen so they will get a pull if they use them, and I suppose so will I (sigh).

Make Sure you have reported this to the Police as the likelihood is that your plates will now be used on another vehicle which is likely to be used for crime related activities.

Thanks, I have reported them stolen, and I was suprised by the fact the police want to come round as soon as I get home. I am going to ask if I can expect to get stopped a lot for a check now my number has been reported as stolen, if so I may get a private plate.

My theory is the slags wanted the car, and when they could not get the keys, they took the plates instead.

Buy yourself a cheap £250 plate from DVLA online which already includes transfer fee.

This way any points / crime / bilking etc etc the crims notch up will not come back to you.

This normally happens is they have found another car in the same colour and spec and want to nick it. If they use the plates of a car that matches then they are less likely to get pulled over as people often don't report number plate thefts.

Someone with a similar model and colour to you is going to be very unhappy soon

There are pre tapped holes for the plate in the rear panel but mine was double sided tape (3quid from halfords)

I came home to find my plate fallen of on the drive. I suspect the unusually high temps made the tape weak.

And where (roughly) are you located? Chances are they will not have travelled too far to find a set of plates....

It's a blue avant in Basingstoke. Personally, I don't find this "stolen for another RS4" theory very plausible, the stolen car would already have plates on, and mine are reported stolen so I dont see what the slags would gain.

They would only gain if you never reported your plates stolen which a lot of people don't do.

Still, Blue Avant's beware then........

Lets hope Plod has a fast patrol car.

to my mind, the most plausible is to use at petrol station, stick my plates on, fill up, run off, take my plates off minutes later. Hopefully I was chosen at random. I actually think that is why plod want to speak to me so quickly (to eliminate me or otherwise).

From now on I will park with front or rear hard up against wall so they cant get at that plate.
