Newbie needs disc advice

So, my RS4 was in the stealership today for a health check. As I expected they came back and told me I would have to sell a child to pay for the work needed! I just wanted Audi to give it the once over.

I need new discs all round and I want to do it my self. Can anyone point me in the right direction to buy some, possibly even at trade price?

They also said I need a new exhaust because the flaps are ceased, but I'm planing an exhaust upgrade before its MOT is due so that's not worrying me.

I'm new to this level of car, I have worked on all my older cars mods/repairs but never one of this spec. Are there any things I should be wary of working on an RS4, like sensors etc?? Are there any links to DIY for the discs?

Someone else will hopefully help you on the disks, I have a mate who works in a garage so gets me good prices ;)

New exhaust, ha, make sure flaps are both in the open position for best noise :thumbs: pull off the vacuum pipes and plug them with number plate screws tie-wrapped - look in the FAQ section if your stuck

I was like you, always do my own servicing disks pads etc on previous cars, no different on these, just bigger :bigblink: one tip though, get a very good (large end as possible to go through holes) punch to knock through the front calliper pins as they can be very tight.

I have come across Stoke Audi on my searching and they seam the best price so far for discs.

Exhaust, yeah they are ceased open so its not that bad! Will that still pass an mot? Little loss of back pressure though so might lose wee bit power?

Re. stuck exhaust flaps, just get some penetrating fluid or something and free them up. I just got a full stock catback (for £20 :) where the valves were seized, just took a bit of spraying and manipulation and they came free, now they move perfectly. Spray around the valve and inside the tailpipe by the flap pivot pin.

Won't affect MOT or power. Many owners just remove the vacuum connection which opens and closes them because they prefer the sound.

Re. discs, there's a thread going on right now about buying OEM disks. Use search if you can't see it.

What is the minimum thickness for them? I'm going to measure them when I get it back on Thursday because your probably right.

I believe the minimum thickness is 32mm - a plus one from me for Stoke Audi parts - I paid just under 1.5K for a complete set of genuine audi discs and pads both F&R [delivered] - I looked into aftermarket but thought If Audi engineered / specd them they must be good enough. The other option of course if yours are not too damaged you could go for a disk re-skim with a pro cut or similar - finally second hand discs come up every now and then - I sold a pair of fronts for £250 a while back ....

Stealers are stealers (but with your permission).

Even if they are close to limit, get them skimmed. They're bound to be over cautious, I would be too if I could sell chunks of metal for £600.

Think I'll get them back and check them out my self and take it from there. Got a funny feeling they are below the min.

I bought my B7 back in November, took it to a stealer for a check up, and they said 2 new rear tyres at £310 each and discs and pads all round for £1800. I took it somewhere else where the head mechanic used to own a B7 (now works for honda) and he put new pads on the front and said I still had 70% pads on the rear and all the discs will last until these pads have gone. I am also still on the same rear tyres now, 3mm left. To add salt into the wound, I just had a service at said Audi Dealer last week and they never bloody mentioned the discs that they had earlier said needed replacing.

Idiots.

Stoke Audi for new discs are best price.

Discs start at 34mm with Audi stating minimum tollerance of 32mm. Many have just skimmed them instead of buying new.

I bought mine from Stoke Audi (group buy) bought Yellow Stuff EBC pads and had a indy fit for £75 - total price came to around £650 - almost half what Audi wanted (£1,200)

with the discs you need to remember that there is some contingency. It is very possible for a car to come into a dealer with discs at 32.1 mm which is fine however they may not technically see that car again for 20k miles or 2 years on variable servicing. So they have to put in a reasonable extra amount otherwise if discs started failing under routine service schedules it would possibly compromise Audi's position.
