Maybe your selector cable as come off / snapped.

Can you plug the vagcom in and see what gear the gearbox thinks it is in when you move the selector? Might be an easy fix.

/edit: cat - the first link you posted showed me a cat before you fixed it.

Can you talk me through this? Where do I look and what exactly am I looking for? If its an easy fix I'll certainly give it a go

Ah yes, now i understand. I must try that when i get my Vagcom back. What does it mean if the value is incorrect/ correct? Gearbox rebuild? Replace sensors?

Man you're having a hard time.

My thoughts are the same, plug in with Vagcom, check to see if the TCU is seeing that you've selected the gears when you move the lever. If not the gear selector switch is dead. It's on the outside of the gearbox and can be replaced in situ. It's fiddly but possible.

I think that the reason that you can't pull it backwards is the almost 'hill control' type feature that these (well the last 3 I've driven anyway) gearboxes have that they won't allow the car to roll backwards when in a forwards gear.

The easiest way I can think of moving it is to remove all of the bolts from one of the front driveshaft's inner CV joint to the gearbox and allow it to turn freely against the gearbox flange. The tight fit of the driveshaft should hold it in place and not allow the driveshaft to drop down. This is for moving it very small distances only, i.e. to manoeuvre it onto a recovery truck or around a garage only! Once one side is free, the front diff will allow the other wheel to turn freely and the centre diff will allow the rear wheels to turn. Jacking up one of the front wheels (and using the jack as the 4th wheel) should have the same effect.

had once the same/similar problems..
a marten ate the cable underneath.. so check out that possibility, you could never know (and yes they're also active in garage's)
car goes automaticly in 'lock' if cable is 'disconnected/broken'

Unfortunately, I don't think it's the selector because you can hear the cavitation when he puts it in a gear. I don't think it's the F125 either. It does sound like something has broken.

There's no hill start feature on the RS6, just the natural forward motion caused by the engine idling with a gear engaged. Mine rolls backwards if the slope is steep enough. That's why I asked him he he'd tried pulling the car back with the engine off but engaged in gear.

In the spec sheet it says 'hill detection capability' whatever that is

No mention of it in the 2003 price/spec book. Mine rolls back on steep inclines as well and a nice medium slope lets the car hold itself in gear without rolling either way

Anyone have a part number for the 'Gear Selector Switch'? I'll order one up incase this is the cause of the problem and have a go at replacing it myself. Im away with work this week but if I order one up tomorrow it could be here for next weekend when I'll be free to do the work. If it isn't the problem, i'll just keep it as a spare.

I have also bought transmission oil and filter to replace the oil in the gearbox, however this was already done in January of this year and Im not convinced this is the cause of the problem but if i thought it would help, i'd certainly give it a go.

Thanks for your suggestions so far

No point changing it until you've diagnosed the problem. Might be fine. The car's been in the garage 2 months, a few more days won't make a lot of difference.

I've replaced a few gear selector switches but never had one that kept the box locked .
