2013 Nav DVD - Pre & post 2010 RNS-E update?

Post by Surrey Sam » Fri Apr 26, 2013 1:05 pm

Hi everyone, just a quick question here:

I've noticed that Audi have a spring offer on their 2013 Navigation DVD (8P0 060 884 BK) bringing the price down to £162 I currently have pre 2010 RNS-E with 0460 software and would like this updated to the latest 0650 software but I also imagine that within the next few months I shall be replacing the unit with the later generation 2010+ RNS-E which I'd then want the latest 0220 software on.

So in summary would I be right in thinking that the same navigation DVD could update both pre and post 2010 RNS-E units?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Sam

Yes, since 2010 the map DVDs have had the update software for both versions of the RNS-E on them, and the RNS-E auto-detects which version it needs and updates if necessary.

Just an update:

Ordered the 2013 disc set from my local dealer and they charged me the original price of £200, they said that they had no record of a spring offer on the navigation DVD's so instead offered me a 6% discount.

Today I went to collect the DVD armed with a printout of the spring offers from Audi's website, upon seeing this they decided to honour the price even though it was below their own cost price from Audi GB. The dealer said they would take the issue up with head office to sort out pricing as the main system has not been updated with the offer price on the Navigation DVD.

Long and short - I have new DVD and the latest software installed on my pre 2010 RNS-E, already noticed a few of the changes. :D

The 0460 software was getting a bit "long in the tooth". 0650 is likely to be the last software for the pre-2010 RNS-E as it's now an obsolete product.

Apologies here guys, I haven't got a clue where to start here. What and how much is it going to be for me to update my RNS in my 06 RS4? (Apart from spending a fortune on a new Rns unit - even then I haven't got my head around what that would be yet!!!).

Sam, what are the changes? If it's anything good I might splash out on a new set too

Fitting a 2010+ RNS-E is electrically a straight swap (no wiring or antenna adapters),just needing recoding with VCDS to match the options in your car.

Physically, it's a bit harder as Audi don't make a version of the 2010+ RNS-E with an A4 faceplate, so you need to get either an A3 or TT version and swap the faceplates over (or get one where someone has already done that for you).

So in terms of part numbers you need either an 8P0 035 193 xx or 8J0 035 193 xx, see http://audiforum.us/threads/audi-a3-8p- ... bers.6850/ and http://audiforum.us/threads/audi-tt-part-numbers.6854/

Once you've got a 2010+ RNS-E then you have the option of replacing the (useless?) glovebox CD changer to an AMI and getting a decent iPod interface (with album and track names) or a hard disk.

To be honest the changes are quite small but as I had old 0460 software and a dated 2006 map I felt the changes were worth it, for others it may not be the case.

So far I've noticed:
TMC reports and timer options
Another voice guidance option - off (phone), not sure how this works as I'm yet to install a Bluetooth module
Petrol Station Logos (very handy as mine is a V-Power SUL only machine)
About half a dozen more POI added to map contents
Clearer fonts
Maps have a bit more detail - non council adopted roads displayed, wooded areas in green & smaller rivers displayed
Updated road maps

Finally I can now also change the start up screen to the RS4 one via VCDS.

For anyone that has retrofitted the 2010+ RNS-E and AMI, and wants a way to listen to the music on their iPhone via Bluetooth instead of hiding it away in the glovebox:

I've got one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ViseeO-Tune2A ... 5d3ab7c6d7 and been trying it out over the last couple of days.

Definitely connects and plays OK, but a couple of times it's reset to playing from the start of the sorted by artist list (I had left it part way down the sorted by album list).

What's the music quality like Dave? Is it as good as SD card or is t mainly just for convenience purposes?

I don't use SD cards, I have a 250GB hard drive that normally in the AMI but I wanted something to give me music while I was reorganising my music collection and copying it onto that hard drive.

There's no reason for the music quality to be any different, all my music (on iPhone, SD card or hard drive) comes from the same 320kbps sampled mp3 files.

Out of interest, how much was the AMI module? Can you play videos from the hard drive?

Hi Dave - Are you using the standard iPhone cable with this BT module? What does the RNS-E see the device as?

I went and bought one of these http://a2dp4audi.netmagi.com/index.html [Combo cable and BT module] but the vendor is saying as the modified cable puts the RNS-E/AMI into Aux mode - no power would be sent to the BT dongle by our RNS-E systems as they are not 3G - they are suggesting that I use an additional cable to inject power into the AMI lead get a power to the BT dongle. I was damn sure that the 2010+ RNS-E was 3G?

The solution you found is far more elegant and if it works the way you say then its probably worth an buy to get BT audio streaming working

Appreciate any comments you have?
