RS4 Clutch Issues

Post by Davesrs4 » Mon Apr 08, 2013 2:01 pm

Hi Guys,
Having brought an RS4 last month from a Garage in Sevenoaks, i seem to be getting clutch issues, but seemingly only in reverse or 1st gear up steep hills where i would be greeted with a strong burning clutch smell. I got a feeling the clutch could be on its way out, is there any way to tell for sure? also, how much would it be to replace as i have been quoted from good ol Audi in Crawley £1346 for the Clutch incl Labour and Vat, and also £1000 for the DMF as well. so worst case scenario im looking at £2400.
Im also thinking if this is something i could get back from the garage under warranty?
any help here would be great as my mechanical skills are non existant.

£2400 for a clutch and dmf sounds big money, you can buy a LUK clutch kit for around £200 and the LUK dmf are around £500 so audi are wanting £1700 labour! :audibash: (LUK are oem manufacturer).

obviously if you can get the garage where you bought it from to sort it then great, if not i would buy the parts myself and go to a good independent.

Many Thanks sar, i think thats the best bet. I am looking to go to QSTuning for my work as they are based in Haywards Heath and not too far from me at all. I will do a search for LUK kit.
Thanks again

eurocarparts are doing the LUK clutch kit for £206.40 then enter SPRING20 at the checkout for 20% off, so about £160 ish.
they don't list the flywheel, however it may be worth giving them a ring as they should be able to supply an LUK one and 20% off the dmf as well would be a bonus.

I'm having mine replaced at Unit20 right now. Labour is something like £530 inc VAT. I enquired about LUK one from eurocarparts but Grizz didn't rate em, so have gone with genuine at £290 inc vat.

Dave, I'd go independent if I were you.

When i had mine replaced i got the LUK cluthc kit from Eurocar parts - think it was £152 inc vat - with the offer they were doing at the time.

Flywheel retail from APS is £797.66 ex vat - my indy managed to get OEM one for £782 inc VAT - i beileve from APS _ i had a contact at APS who could have got me one at £709 but had to pick it up which was a pain.

Labour is about 8 hours - so an Indy will probably be £60 plus Vat = £576

So all in you shoul dbe able to get it doen for around: £152 + £ 782 + £576 = £1,510

May be worth having the Master and Slave Cylinders and Clutch return pipe replaced at same time - this will add a small amount to the over all cost.

One issue that the garage may have is undoing the 6 studs that hold the exhaust to the manifold - these are prone to rust in place due to be aluminium to steel - if this has happend then the studs need to be cut of, retapped and new studs put in - stud cost about £6 from Audi - just adds a bit to the labour.

Normal sign of the clutch going is the peddle will stick down with sprinted driving.

How many miles has the car done ? how long since you bought it ?

AmD at Lakeside, Essex did my clutch and flywheel recently using OEM parts - think it was around £1850 for that. Also did slave and master cylinders and clutch return pipe at the same time. I think the total bill came to just over 2k. They take a lot of care and know the cars better than most dealers I imagine.

Hrm, ok, that's what I thought too, but grizz seemed to say differently.

Maybe the audi stamped ones are a different quality to LUK own-branded ones???

I'll mention to grizz when I'm in to pick it up.

Thanks a lot guys, sorry for the late reply. Spikey, i brought the car about a Month ago and it had 59k on it, its now on 60K. i did try sprinting from 1st to second and it did stick for a split second. Although it hasnt happened since. i just try not driving around certain hilly roads in Brighton, they should use cable cars on some of those roads!!!
Im taking it for a 60k service at QS Tuning tomorow so i shall see what they think.
Thanks again for the input
