AMD Gearbox rebuild feedback

Post by ant1 » Wed Mar 27, 2013 9:30 pm

Well it's been 2 weeks, covered just over 1k already, and have been asked several times how it all went so thought I would post some feedback on my experience with AMD.

I could have not been more happier, the guys where really professional, always answered my questions, provided a good courtesy car, and more importantly, the mechanic working on my car was spot on. So much so after this experience I would not take this car anywhere else to be maintained. I also some cheeky discount on a full cambelt change along with all rollers, thermostat and water pump for £800 whilst the engine was out.

Reason for this is not just the gearbox replacement but also with a issue I was having with my exhaust after collection.

I was told by many traders that it would take 8hrs + to remove and refit 1x downpipe and cat. Some traders said it would be a engine out job!!!!!! Only 1x trader quoted 4hrs for the job.

I paid AMD another visit this week with a replacement part and this guy had it off, replaced, exhaust re-adjusted in 4hrs flat. That's me handing over the keys and driving out, 4hrs! This was done for free with only me paying for the parts, I did not ask for this but offered.

I spend a lot of money on cars, some 12k engine rebuilds, dogboxs, track cars, list goes on and I know a good egg when I see one as I have been bitten hard over the years.

So as I said, not only will AMD be carrying out all work on my car going forward, this mechanic will be the only man I will near it with a spanner.

As for the gearbox........ car drives like a dream :beerchug:

So if anyone else needs a box doing, make sure you add them to your list!

Forward gears where smooth as pie, just reverse when warm was a problem.

Now smoother than ever, feels like new I guess.

Point to note, as the engine was out they changed the coolant, engine oil, engine filters, and steering fluid. That's a lot of £££ included for £3600.

Yep, same one but for the S3 not the 6, only MRC for me on that front. Ant1, with all the money you are pouring in to cars (just like I do...), stop puckering up over pennies and buy those pads ;).

Although far from a cheap activity thats actually a reasonable price for what is a PITA job. Gives me a little more comfort to use first gear a little harder without cringing to much at the short life I am giving the box. Id imagine most people will also have a number of "other" works done whilst the engine is out, stupid not to really.

Got to agree here. I'd consider this and the recent 3.5k offer from Grizz good prices for this job.

This could have an impact on values. I for one have benefitted from the amazing value of the rs6 in recent markets, for what the car is it is incredible value.
My only minor concern was the gearbox costs, but when you look at it now, as long as the car is a long termer then just over £3k is fantastic news in the great scheme of things. Course we would prefer £1k but it is an almost supercar! £3k slush fund it is then.
