Just as an update on this I had my car in yesterday for its oil change but also to replace the oil separator valve.... and sure enough the valve had perished. The new one in place and the car combined perhaps with changing to 5W-40 oil feels much smoother in acceleration, some of the cold start misfire type lumpiness has gone (probably because there isn't as much excess oil sitting in the block now because it is removed as should be?) and so far isn't as smokey (although it does still do it under hard acceleration however I have very little in the exhaust system to stop this coming out anyway unlike OEM back boxes). It was also treated to a can of DIP3 aerosol.

So all in all happy, will keep you posted if oil consumption is any better as I was down and a litre every 1100 miles. BTW oil separator is £92 from TPS and a couple of hours labour to fit, well worth it on older cars IMO. Engine mount however is a different story, can't get at it unless the exhaust manifold is off so either way it is an engine out job. May do that when the tensioners get changed; BTW anyone any idea when the tensioners are due a change? 120k miles? more?

On the maintenance schedule I've seen (not sure how up-to-date it is), it says...

that will be for B5 the B7 is chain so wont have a ribbed V belt only for the Aux items. The chain still has tensioners though.

im thinking of replacing my oil separator valve as i noticed a bit of suction when i open my oil filler cap, plus its slightly lumpy on start up like P_G mentioned.
also i have had to top up my oil more than normal but not sure if thats just because its due changing.
dose anyone know where to find how to change it in elsawin, i have looked high and low i cant seem to find it?.

RESURRECTION!!!

Who replaced this in the end? Was there a correlation to this valve and oil usage? Mines using a fair bit, I left a large cloud of smoke when I booted it earlier...looked brown, not black or blue.. No faults, pulls like a train, any ideas?

Mines got suction when I remove the oil filler cap, but I thought it was supposed to do that??
