It's not limited to the RS6. Loads of 5HP24/a suffer from it.

Sid had a problem with his reverse and it was the selector switch, that threw all the lights up though I think.

That's true, it can be an easy fix. Good point. I should have mentioned that. But I was referring to the lack to drive in reverse problem.

This is the email I got back with the problem. Sound about right?

Oakdene transmissions say it is a small piston at the rear of the box of which the seal perishes, it then looses oil pressure for reverse gear. when the box is cold is reverses fine as the piston seal is tight. we had the oil tested to see if it shoes any other problems and that came back fine.

Amar wins. All hail Amar. Problem is the box still has to come out I think. The oil is thicker when cold, that's why it works then.

That reverse gear is what went wrong on the allroad I had. Parked down my drive when I picked it up, in the morning put it in reverse, and nothing, just sat there revving! It's still a gearbox off job, and while it's off might as well get a new tc.

And a new gearbox. The reverse failure is a symptom, not a cause.

Yep, cost me £1500, I'd only owned the car one day!
Always had a lumpy first gear change from cold after that. But once it had changed gear once it was so smooth!
