R8 vs S4

Post by Nickyboy » Fri Feb 08, 2013 8:33 pm

Coming out of a roundabout onto a dual carriageway with a V8 R8 behind me and we both hit the loud pedal and I moved into the left lane expecting him to trash me. To my surprise up to 70mph where I stopped pushing he stayed behind me and only gained a little. He kept pushing whilst I was braking and he came flying past (beautiful noise). I followed him off the next roundabout and yes he was quicker than me but not by much to be fair. I also had a boot full of shopping and a few computers which of course adds weight and added to my surprise.

Got the complementary hazards flash and then followed him into the city. Gave him a rev at the traffic lights and got one back. That thing sounds bloody awesome. Made the S4 sound weak. It was interesting to see his back end twitch when he was accelerating out of a bend.

To conclude, yes he was quicker on the straight but marginally, obviously I would be nailed in the twisties which was why he got the jump on me out of the second roundabout. His obviously sounded nicer and looks nicer. However due to mine costing half the price and being an avant I felt like I had a small moral victory. I think the B8 RS4 would seriously hassle the V8 R8.

If its any of you on here then hello! :bigwave:

Overall he wins, yes but my 40k A4 TDI with a boot full of shopping didn't get spanked by a 90k supercar on the straight! Think I'd spend 20k less and get a GTR or 30k more and get a V10, if I could.

I did wonder the difference if I had an S5 with sports diff or of course an S4 saloon with the diff.

Next steps up being RS3/4 then what? Level in the straight and slightly behind in the twisties?

The comparison of straight-line speed for pretty much all performance cars is getting very narrow these days. Drag race bragging rights aren't really what they used to be. I'd like to see you keep up with the R8 in the twisties (given, your brakes probably wouldn't fade) or even spot an admiring glance from a non-enthusiast. It's still a worthy 90k MR sports coupé, would you really buy a Datsun?

Good points. It was just surprising to me that i wasnt annialated. On a track under braking and corners yes I already know I would be creamed. It was the drag that suprised me.

Would I buy the GTR, yes. Purely for the performance.

I had a test drive of the GTR before i bought my S4 over two years ago ,ok it is a fast car but the quality of materials i.e. leather ,plastics are not on par with audi. The S4 is a good all round car and with a bit of help from MRC it becomes a very fast good all round car.

Me too! I drove the GTR the same day as the S4.

I echo your comments. The GTR is a bloomin fast one trick pony, and I mean bloomin fast!

But I couldn't live with it everyday. Hard, crashy ride. Cheap plastics. Too loud (sound & looks!).

I had a clear choice of either car, and chose the S4 knowing it was a slower car. However I can easily make the S4 go faster (hello Mr MRC). The GTR is a much more difficult prospect to make it feel a nice place to sit.
Lots of rubbish cars slowly progressing to a nice shiny S4
