I hear what you are saying DK about the RS6 and its steels but didn't Nigel warp his £22k set of Mov'it ceramics around the Ring???? Maybe you weren't trying hard enough LOL
Race teams change disks and pads out routinely... been to Audi customer racing and discussed this with the team that build the R8 LMS Ultra and TTRS ADAC endurance cars, they run steel discs (and pads that are at least double thickness of std application) and are quick release as they change them DURING races.
I have driven the C6 and R8 with steel and CCB's back to back on road and track... the C6 at 2t+ unfortunately is just too damn heavy for continued aggressive breaking on ANY system, I have superheated (ruined) a brand new set of steels in one day at VMax and didn't do that many runs. I have seen two other people have OEM CCB's almost on fire after a 15min track session and have also tried MOVIT CCB's that suffered the same fate (overheating), albeit 5 up with luggage round the 'Ring is a gruelling as you can throw at any car I'm sure.
And no Olly you can't really warp floating discs, vibration is generally just uneven pad transfer or incorrect bedding in from new.
To be fair to MOVIT they offered to upgrade my discs to some with higher temp coating... (CCB's can be tailored to pretty much any application) but by that time I decided to change the car rather than try to make it something it was never designed to be.... £22k er no, comparable with OEM price, I went with them in the notion I could take them onto the next car but didn't quite happen that way sadly as I went R8 and the R8 OEM CCB's are awesome.
The R8 steels are stunning, will shock every driver on first occasion in a lightweight car, however I've seen Audi test drivers have these burning up after continued Px rides at Silverstone... a bit embarrassing for Audi but again ALL systems have a designed application and limits accordingly. The R8 CCB's are mind blowingly good, straight from cold they will put you through the screen but the best compliment I can give them is I can track the car until I get tired and have to come in (40min), I don't have to ever think about brakes but no doubt they also have a limit... just not found it yet.
