Newbie advice please!

Post by rmm » Sun Sep 26, 2004 9:05 pm

Hi , I am new to rs246 and was wondering if anyone could help with this?-
I have a 1999 S4 which has not been modified. It has covered 77k miles and has FASH to date.
The problem is performance , I timed it 30-70 mph and after several runs it was not able to beat 6.5 seconds. My previous car (a 210bhp S3) was able to do 30-70 in 5.9. I then timed 0-60 for the S4 and it again wasn't able to beat 6.5 or so. Is this what should be expected of an S4? or is there something wrong with it? It drives smoothly with only a slight siren noise from the turbos for the first minute or so which then disappears altogether. Many thanks in advance.....

There's some old posts which have some timings in here :-

...Might help you to figure if something is wrong or not...You could try the search feature to get any more posts with ideas as to what you should expect/what could be wrong.

Figures done on the road are very subjective - yours could be accurate or out by a second either way. A rolling road run should reveal the power of the car and highlight any problems (i.e. the Air mass sensor gives reduced power if it is broken). Also consider running a diagnostic check on the car to see if error codes are present.

What gear are you in for the 30-70, and at what point do you start the 'test' i.e. from 20mph so that boost is present, or do you include the lag in your times? The S4 is a heavier car than the S3 and if it's in 6th, the gearing might play a part. Another option is to go to a RS246.com meet.

Thanks for the advice.
I start the test by planting it in second at about 20mph , starting the clock as the speedo passes 30 mph and changing up to third at 5k rpm (tried changing at 6k rpm but no quicker) , so the lag isn't included. This is the same method I used for the S3 also.
I took the Corrado VR6 out today and it felt much quicker although previously the S4 has felt quicker , leading me to believe that the performance of the S4 has diminished.
I booked the S4 in to the local audi stealer for next week for it's 78k service and also to have the performance problem investigated.
Will keep you posted.......

Well , had the car in the local stealers today and the diagnostics showed a fault with a 'gas sensor' in the exhaust which they believe to be the cause of the diminished performance.
It will cost £350 inc vat and fitting apparently.
I'm relived it's not the turbos although I'll not know for definite until the gas sensor is replaced.
(it has to be ordered)
Thanks for the advice.

Further update -
Left the car into the local stealers , all excited at the prospect of getting it back to full power!
Halfway thru the morning I got a phone call - the stealers had ordered the wrong part (they said...)
so a wasted trip and an underperforming S4 was returned to me.
It is now booked in again for next week.
Heres hoping.......

Well , I finally got the car back , having had the exhaust gas sensor replaced.
I reckoned it felt quicker , the S4 torque low down was always there but it felt much quicker higher up the rev
range so we timed it.
Previous 0-60 -- 6.5s
Now 0-60 5.2s
Previous 30-70 -- 6.5s
Now 30-70 5.1s

I am well pleased as these figures are at least as good as the car magazines got when the car was new , and mine has now covered over 70k miles!
It really is very quick now.
Thanks for the advice. :beerchug:
