The hill hold is great if you don't want to use start stop and you want hill hold on. I'm a huge fan of it.

Wouldn't putting it in park just negate the need for hill hold in that case?

im a fan of hill hold as well ,why put start stop on a performance car? Putting gearbox in P should only be used when parking the car engine off thats why hill hold is good otherwise you would have to keep your foot on the brake.

Sometimes start stop doesn't work unless I put it in 'P'. It is odd but I guess there is a reason why.

Start stop will not always work depending on other demands on the car eg if you have a big electric drain with heaters (fans/seats/windows etc) and other items on

Yes, true. However, it wont work sometimes using the clutch but will with the gearbox. When using the clutch it will give the sign that start stop is unavailable but then put it in P and it is available.

I have tried this when the engine is up to temperature and all electrics off (as much as they can be).

I would have had to have the ceramics. I was not convinced by the steel offering and that was piddling around Millbrook. Leg needed to be longer as I was pushing the pedal a long way.

Options may not be entirely recoverable, but they do add saleability and if spending > 60k why quibble over the odd five grand. It's almost penny pinching....want it then tick it. Buy gold if you want your money back!

LOL, but when £60k turns into £65k then £70k. You have to draw a line and mine is notionally £64k i.e. not quite £65k

I always swore I'd never spend more on a car than my first flat - £54k....oops!

That's OK if you have a handbrake, in the historic form. You soon get fu££ed off with having to engage the parking brake everytime you stop when crawling up a hill or coming to a junction. Hill hold assist does make sense.

causes all sorts of problems if you do that when the brakes are hot.

how does the audi hill hold assist work? with swimbo's mini it simply keeps the brakes on for a second after you take your foot off if you are not moving. It auto matically disengages when the clutch is lifted. Automatic and completely transparent from normal driving.

The thing is though - cars are moving to electronic handbrakes... which are a pita but how does the rs4 one work? is it a separate button or linked to the "p" gear position?

Hill hold is another button that auto engages the foot brake when you come to a stop, it's not a separate brake it just auto engages the brake, effectively putting an auto foot on the brake hence my sarcasm. In all my years of driving manuals and autos not having an auto brake has not been a major issue. I have had it on an x5 and ended up with it off as in traffic it can be a pain. I've driven an rs5 for 3 weeks without it and just put my size 10s on the left pedal when sat at traffic lights.

You've just given the best and easiest to understand discription of hill hold assist, its a pain in the arse as you have got to manually engage it every time you start the car and you must have your seatbelt on aswell.On my merc sl if you depressed the brake twice it would automatically engage hill hold and thats a much better system.

I struggled to activate it when I drove the C63. Probably needed to get used to it, same as anything different.
