I have a B7 RS4,, on a motorway run at 75 - 80 mph I can get 25 ish sometimes a little more, but when you come off the motorway and into town that drops like a stone.

I was torn between the two as well and I asked myself this, if I was sitting at the lights in an S5 and an RS4 pulled up beside me what would I think.....

I bought the RS4.

Little tip, buy shares in BP before you buy one, at least you'll get a little back each year in dividends!

Had mine for two weeks now. Depending on my commute, between 21 - 23 . Would be 25 - 26 if the last few miles weren't in town. Best so far 29 on motorway but might have been more if I hadn't been in a traffic jam for part of the journey

that was OBC, mine reads a bit less than 1 mpg high
I was very impressed
Arthur,

Are these US gallons you are talking about i.e. 3.785 litres per US gallon or have you adjusted for European 4.5 litres to a proper gallon?

My figures were back when I had a BMC filter but that does F all compared to the standard filter really. Since I had the exhaust and revolution filter fitted my mpg dropped massively but that is only to be expected whenever you make the engine sound better (revving it more). Haven't done any long distance motorway runs since fitting (well I drove to London for a service last week but it took me an hour to drive 4 miles so mpg in single numbers). If I consciously do the drive to work by not caning it I can still get similar numbers to before so I think the lowers numbers are just down to me loving the sound it makes when revving to 5 or 6k then backing off and listening to it burble and pop on the overrun.

And as i said before I'm on accelerator and brake all the time on the motorway making full use of that awesome pulling power therefore the only time I use cruise control is when I'm driving through those poxy 50mph average speed sections. Obviously, driving at a steady 50 in 6th gear is going to give a massive improvement over my normal economy but as soon as I'm out of the 50 section I'm back on the throttle so can't really say how much better the efficiency is.

US Gal, not Imperial

I was surprised
the only 2 changes since I last tried this (only got 28 or so)
K&N filter
all season Conti DWS oem size tires and a higher pressure 40/39 F/r as compared to Conti SC3 265/35 running 37/36 or so (they have a higher load rating, so a lower pressure for same load capacity)

the a/s tires are much harder and roll much easier

an Imperial gallon would yield ~15% more or 35-36 gal if 31 per US gal

Real world MPG

Pretty much the same results as other forum members. Average 25mpg over the 15 mile journey to the office, but that drops to 16-17mpg around town, with similar numbers if I put my foot down. Funnily enough though I find myself driving slower on motorways and dual carriageways than in previous cars.

Hi guys I can chime in on the newer supercharged V6 that's in the B8, my average mpg was 23mpg just kicking about but best I ever seen driving up from the borders was 32 mpg. Just ordered a new B8 rs4 so my mpg isn't going to be wildly different

Last 3000 miles, mostly short journeys with occasional motorway I'm averaging 20mpg and I'm a mixed hacker and plodder. Best I've ever seen was 30mpg on a 80 mile best effort Eco run all motorway and I'd say I probably did 60-70 and was actively looking to see if 30 was achievable, It just isn't if your driving normally, not even close, Low 20's.

you don't buy a v8 and worry about petrol. if your doing 25k a year you'll need fair deep pockets for petrol and other costs, servicing, tyres, brakes, issues, tax

If your looking for 30mpg don't even bother!

24mpg is best I've seen on a motorway run!

Use mine daily and have a long blast most weekends and average for the week is 12-14mpg.

Daily use when booting it makes the weeks average 6-9mpg but it's an enjoyable week ;)

I'd be surprised if the fuel costs alone for a 10k miles year of driving were less than £5k.

Extremely enjoyable miles those though.
