Brake disc minimum thickness

Post by Nobby » Fri Jun 08, 2012 11:29 pm

Would anyone be able to confirm these sizes for me quickly please (not like super urgent though)

Front disc minimum thickness according to below is 32.4mm

Rear disc minimum thickness according to below is 20.4mm

I know its stamped on the discs, but obviously the car is still at the garage. If its correct then I should be getting a gleeming new set of discs all round :) I measured them the other day (yes I took some micrometers along) and thought they were worn, garage owner is doing MOT and multipoint check so this SHOULD be found but its worth point out to him at the earliest opportunity.

Cheers

Just had a look at my OE disks. Fronts: minimum 32.4mm; Rears: minimum 20.4mm.

What disks are you getting? What are those part numbers?

Those discs above are just some ones I found on the Internet in the states. Either way the discs on the car are actually 30mm thick at the front and 19 and a bit at the back. Way below both lots of minimum thicknesses.

Mine were 30% off minimum thickness when I bought the car 1.5 years ago...I haven't had the courage to measure them
Not done a whole lot of miles since then mind.

I rarely if ever get above 70mph though so I'm not too worried about it, the rule we used on track with drilled discs is that you need to replace them when the crazing/cracking starts to connect the holes.

I should measure my rears for a laugh. They needed changing 3 years ago.

Guys, I just got my "old" 365mm discs back from getting them skimmed. Based on how I treated them over the whopping 4000 miles that I had them on since buying new, I thought it worth doing. I have just checked one of them and it is on 32.9MM, forgot to check the other one but expect it to be the same. For non-nutcase drivers, how much life would you expect these to have in them?

I have a feeling that for what I may get for them second hand, I may have just wasted £60 getting them skimmed...... I just didn't want to punt them on to somebody without making sure they were in the best condition possible.

Shop, why have you not bothered changing your rear discs if they've needed changing..? My rears need doing, the pads have been worn down to metal! I should have kept an eye on them as knew the rears don't have sensors, I was getting a metal on metal grinding noise on the way to work today, I want to get them done asap but was looking for somewhere to grind down my old discs first, seeing as they aren't that bad, well they soon will be with the metal pads fecking 'um up.

@Footers, bit of life left in them yet. Would definitely interest someone, I'm sure, at the right price.

@Amar, because I am lazy. I have the new disks sitting in my workshop where they have been collecting dust for about 4 months. Still, after coming up to 4 years of needing to be done, I'm sure they can wait a bit longer. :)

I'm well up on checking my brakes after I had a pad come out on my s3. Just coming off the motorway at, well let's say nsl and brake pad pops put and pedal goes to the floor. I had only had the car serviced the week before so was suprised it wasn't spotted.

Well, I've just bought some Brembo rear pads from nextdaybrakes.com for £33, and that price includes next day delivery too. I'm pleased with that. I dunno how good the standard Brembo pads are, but I'm not too bothered with the rear brakes. Insurance renewal coming up this month so I've got bigger fish to fry...
