18" winter tyres

Post by joesnow » Mon Nov 05, 2012 7:15 pm

I know there are a few threads regarding winter tyres but most seem to refer to the 19" wheels.

Any reason why the popular choices aren't so good on an 18" rim???

Was looking at the Vred Winterac Xtreme.

Cool. Thought I would just check to make sure they weren't terrible in a smaller size. No reason to think they would be but the experts are on here and got a week before I need to order them.

Have these tyres (17") on my wife's RAV4 now for four winters and the rears will probably need replacing at the ned of this winter. (25,000+ miles without problem)
Shockingly, I ran them through the summers as well - I realise that they aren't as efficient as a summer tyre, but I have nothing but praise for Wintrac Extremes.

If I decide to run my Avant through the winter they will be at the top of my list for winter tyres.

Im running the 19" wintrac extremes at the moment. Perhaps 18" would have been cheaper but then id have to get hold of a new set of wheels as well which bumps the total cost right up, for all the difference in performance of the narrower wheel except in deep snow i didnt think it worth the extra cost.

Ive had the tyres on since the start of october and so far we've had one friday night of snow up in aberdeen, actually a reasonable coverage, more than i had expected. On untreated roads i didnt even have the abs kick in, let alone have any traction issues (except when provoked  ). In normal driving conditions eg dry roads and +10c the wintracs seem fine, noticeably more movement on the treadblocks than the Sportmaxx summer tyres but they were well worn in so the change was always going to be significant going to any brand new tyre.

Bodes well for when we get some proper snow, RS4 will be the perfect tool for getting up to the hills for some snowboarding!

Thanks Chris.

I am running 18" wheels already. My plan is to replace the current tyres with winter ones and then come April I'll buy a set of 19" wheels so the 18's can become my winter wheels and then 19's for summer. That's if the funds allow. Alternatively I will get another set of 18" tyres and have to pay to swap the tyres over each time.

Sounds like a good plan if you're on the 18s already.

I'd go for a set of rs6 wheels for the 19s!
