Yes, if it's limiting you to 5k it's because there is something wrong with the engine.

Yes, mine will rev to 8250 even when cold (not that I deliberately do this) just as it states in the manual.

I will check it tomorrow, I know roughly where on my journey to work the warning disappears so I will let the oil warm up a bit then try it before the warning goes. However it has never kicked in at 7k before.

Mine cuts in at 7k when cold as well. It has alway done this from new.

I've only hit it a couple of times, but 99% sure that it's the lower (7k) limit
