Insurance?? Arrgghhh!!

Post by andy » Sun Oct 07, 2012 11:06 am

Just got my renewal through from Admiral for £766 which I'm not overly happy with. I do have business miles on there also which is probably bumping it up plus I've declared the Milltek. However at 42 living in Sussex with the car parked in secure car park during the day and driveway at night, I thought it would be cheaper. Time to Shop around and try to get them to quote against themselves!

My last quote iwth admiral was 60% higher than their quote from confused.com.
even that was 46 in the list and got for half that.

Since starting a venture in car insurance I've come to the conclusion that no bugger can make any money on the first year premiums (claims is a completely different matter however). Almost all are selling at an effective loss in order to get the new business and thats why they suddenly go up the next year. From our analysis it's quite ironic that the second year quote is generally not far off the "normal price".

Not defending insurance companies but I found it interesting.

I went with Zurich Private Clients through a broker to cover the RS6, Shelby Cobra, Integrale and Fiat 500, maybe not the cheapest (about £2k all in) but they really are excellent and cover much more than the usual suspects.

Effectively fully comp on any car, full euro breakdown cover, full no-claims protection on all 4 cars, they hardly batted an eyelid when I needed to make a claim; I just said I'd had a prang, sent them the quote and they sorted it all out with no need to fill in forms etc. Damn good value.

Had a pleasant surprise with my insurance today which doesn't happen very often. My renewal with Admiral was due last week and managed to get it down from £860 (inc business use, hire car and personal injury) to £790, still not great but with mods declared it was one of the cheapest quoted. My misses also now has her insurance with Admiral but we hadn't done them together on a multi car so I phoned back today for a quote to see if it was worth changing. Matching my policy with extras and mods declared it came down to £550 plus another £100 off my misses insurance when she comes to renew :beerchug: Dead chuffed with that and pretty good for one phone call 8)

On my previous car I was with Privilege and my renewal quote once went from £450 to £970  10 years No claims and probably £10k worth of payments all for absolutely nothing. So much for customer loyalty.

No thanks. Got it for less than £400 in the end with Adrian Flux.

Thanks, I'm getting there slowly... but my garage is nowhere near big enough yet, it's still missing an Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, Lancia LC2 and McLaren M8F. Note to self: must work harder! :D

A Lancia LC2 would be wonderful, but I'd prefer to keep it British and get a Jaguar XJR9. Add a Metro 6R4 and you really have my dream garage.

Any chance of pics of the Cobra?

have just been through the Insurance maze myself today. Admiral for two cars, the RS and an SUV comes out at £1200, nearest other quote close to double, it just seems incredible. I keep saying to my self, if it seems to good to be true it probably is, the rational is that there are laws to prevent it being unrealistic. Zurich came through at twice this.

Anyone made a claim with Admiral? Issues?

Its so confusing

Thanks

I have been with admiral for years on a multi car policy. Always been the cheapest with all my cars.

Last year we had to claim on the wife's car, ford focus diesel, for a paint job. All sorted in 3 weeks. Great job from admiral but the courtesy car was a bit shoddy. Bold tyres, poor gearbox, pulled to the left and v dirty.

It does always slightly worry me that on a big claim it might be harder but any insurance company will try get out of paying up. Just dot your i s and cross you t s and you should be fine.
