Horrible Grinding Noise........

Post by Stalex » Thu Oct 25, 2012 2:23 pm

My car (B6 04 Avant Auto) went for its MOT yesterday and all fine apart from a couple of minor issues and advisories. Topped up some oil and washer fluid etc.

It was dropped back to my work place and when I went to go home last night I started it up and get a horrible whirring/grinding mechanical sound from the rear of the engine bay. I removed the 0000 cover to look to see if anything had been left of slipped down behind the engine but can see nothing.

Anyone got any ideas whats down there are what it could be? I know next to nothing about mechanics and suspect the local stealers will rape me for an investigation.

Obviously it was running perfectly when it went in for its MOT. Coincidence or something more sinister???

Thanks in advance......

Sorry to be the bearer of possible bad news but not sound good at all. The timing chain, tensioner's etc are located at the rear of the engine. It may be that something not very nice is going off. I would get someone to check for codes. Have you got a CEL? Is it still running? I would not drive until it has been checked out because if it does go tits up big time then your looking at approx. 3k.

I did not know they gave advisories for low oil. Could it be that they gave your car an Italian tune before handing it back?

That is what i thought!!!
Yes, it still runs and the engine itself sounds fine. it is definately mechanically sounding. What is a CEL? an engine management warning light? that is not on. All the coil packs and plugs have been changed and it was running perfectly yesterday am.
Better brace myself!!

Try and find someone with a code reader. If something is going to terminally go wrong or something minor is amiss it will throw fault codes.

How long did the noise last for?

If it was only a few seconds sounds like the cam chain tensioners.

The noise is permanent. Stationary or moving...in gear and out of gear.....off to AUDI tomorrow to check it over. will report the undoubted bad news back.

How did they test the brakes? If they used the machine it couldn't screwed something expensive.

Sounds similar to something I had and it turned out to be the A/C pump.

I never got to test it but presumably the noise would go if the A/C was turned off.

oooooo never let them drive your car again, sit outside the MOT station and watch them do it !!. I worked near an MOT station and garage and the little halfbreeds regularly screwed cars up and down the road. It could just be coincidence and I may just be paranoid but after also watching ford 'technicians' doing the same to focus St's etc behind the dealership

NO ONE DRIVES ME CAR BUT ME

Would you bloody believe it........left the car at work last night so as not to drive the thing.......checked here this am and thought i'd try with the Aircon off (just in case). Started her up and the noise has disappated to a barely audible whine.......air con on or off.

Getting it transported to AUDI today for a check over. I am baffled because it was a serious grinding noise.

Here is the next installment.....

Audi removed the sump cover, drained the oil, changed the filter and refilled with oil. £260+VAT.The noise remains and they are convinced it is coming from the gearbox.

Next steps.....

£1400+VAT to drop he box out and see if it is the "clutch pack" whatever that is which will cost £400+VAT. If there is nothing wrong with that it is a new gearbox at £6480+VAT.

Think I might top myself  !!!!

Mechanically minded people......what are my options please??? re the car not how to kill myself :D !!

Booked into an Auto gearbox specialist this pm. They did an A8 g/box for £1400...full rebuild and warranty. Did say that being put on a rolling road may have something to do with it!!

F**king Brighton Audi.....bunch of clowns!!

Yeah that's why I mentioned the MOT brake test. They put it on rollers to test the brakes, which spins the front and rear wheels separatly, which eats expensive parts of the 4wd system. That was my first thought when I read your opening post.

I'd say a diff or something like that would have broke before the gearbox.

Claim off the garage.
