C5 RS6 / Mercedes W211 E55K comparison

Post by BillTheButcher » Tue Oct 16, 2012 9:02 pm

Hello all. :)

For the last 6 months I've been driving a Mercedes W211 E55K. It's a great car, very quick and really comfortable, but I'm thinking I might like to try something different.

I've always had an urge to try the C5 RS6 but last time I changed car I was put off by the horror stories about DRC, replacement gearboxes, blown turbos, leaking ICs, etc.

I'm still wary of all that but I'm also still interested.

I'd have to get a modded one otherwise I think I'd find it a bit sluggish after the E. I see that Mooch's old one is up for sale at the moment and that's got the sort of figures that I think I'm after. :)

What's the lag like on these? Is it real on/off stuff like my old B5 RS4, i.e. sod all below about 4k and then BANG, or is it more progressive?

Get MRC Doug's. Mooch's has been declawed since the glory days, IIRC.

Agreed. The Blue beast would put you right up there with the big boys, assuming you could deal with a loon.

Lots of torque from really low down. No appreciable lag - at least not on the ones I've driven. Maybe on the ones with bigger turbos?

personally didn't hear of blown turbos, i think is one of the parts that last given they work on low pressure, you're right though about the others :), but the DRC and the IC's aren't such big issues and can be fixed or replaced for a reasonable amount of money, the big ticket is the gearbox!

How's the E55k? i would try one at some point, but IMO the RS6 looks much better, has more personality and i am pretty sure it's much sportier, however, i like the exhaust sound of the AMG :)
2004 RS6 by ABT, madly in love with it, RNS-E, ST coilovers, new TC, 19x9x29 RS4 B7 wheels, non-resonated Milltek w/blk tips, TBC....SOLD - but never to be forgotten!
2004 RS6 ebony schwarz, SE exhaust, 19'' rims - SOLD
'09 RS6 C6 - the great white - now, this means business!

This is Mooch's old car isn't it?

Did it have even more grunt when Mooch owned it?

The E55K is an awesome machine. Comfortable, easy to drive and then when you want to crack on just wind the revs up to about 2600 and tap into the supercharged torque. It's very addictive. :) It's a great car but I've always wanted to own a C5 RS6 and it looks like there are some good examples around at the moment with the DRC sorted and the right kind of mods for me.

Thanks for the link.

I contacted Doug about it when it first went up for sale back in August. I'm amazed it hasn't sold yet.

Not my cup of tea due to being a loon and Mugello is my least favourite colour, but it has to be worth going to have a look at as it is pretty pimped out.

Saloon is no problem: my E55 is a saloon and my girlfriend owns a hatchback if we ever need the extra space. :)

I've never seen a Mugello in real life but it looks OK from the pictures. I'd prefer black but I'm not that fussy about car colours as long as they're not yellow or red.

Most people seem to really like the Mugello, I am just weird. Have you given Doug a call yet? - 01295 277308

No. I have the details of the car from when it first went up for sale in August and I'm not even sure I want to change yet. I don't want to waste his time until I have a clearer idea of what I want to do. :)

Go see Doug and take the car for a drive, that'll make your mind up. If you don't take to Doug's car then you'll never have a C5 RS6. If you don't buy the car at least you can get your Merc remapped while your there. :D

I like the way you think.

A straight swap for my Merc would obviously be best for me but that's probably not what Doug had in mind.
