Flat-Bottom steering wheel flawed?
Re: Flat-Bottom steering wheel flawed?
I don’t like the contrasting feel between the leather and the plastic, it’s also feels cheap and far too slippery.
I’m having the whole steering wheel re-covered in contrasting leather, can’t wait to see how it'll looks and feel.

A photo when it's done would be great.nij wrote:I don’t like the contrasting feel between the leather and the plastic, it’s also feels cheap and far too slippery.

Ah - so that's what those rumble strips leading up to roundabouts are for.....Timster wrote:+1

It's a wee bit hard driving with your knees if you've got a FBSW. Not that anyone I know does that. We're all advanced motorists on this forum...

Just a quick photo from the trimmer, will be picking the interior up tomorrow.stu wrote:A photo when it's done would be great.nij wrote:I don’t like the contrasting feel between the leather and the plastic, it’s also feels cheap and far too slippery.

Don't want to sound rude but that doesn't look right to me

I have to agree. It would have been good to keep the RS4 badge too.
I'm considering the option of covering the whole wheel in Alcantara (inc the silver bottom, but keeping the RS4 badge)

Re: Flat-Bottom steering wheel flawed?
I reckon alcantara would look nice, but would prefer to see the silver flat bottom of the wheel left as is, however it would still look good completely covered with badge showing, bit different too

Re: Flat-Bottom steering wheel flawed?
Some owners that spec'd the alcantara wheel as OE fit said it started pilling and going shiny very quickly, not sure alcantara is durable enough on a steering wheel?

Didn't know it was even an OEM option.
I know it's got limited durability but I really dislike that silver bit at the bottom and its the best way I can think of getting rid of it. I've seen a carbon replacement on German EBay but its something like £250!!
Fair play for doing something different though

Re: Flat-Bottom steering wheel flawed?
Don't get me wrong, I love the look of the FBSW (that's why I still have the original steering wheel). I have very dry hands and the plastic just have no grip.Silas Stephenson wrote:Don't want to sound rude but that doesn't look right to me
I have contemplated about keeping the RS4 badge, I still could put it on the original part of the wheel or on the middle of the bottom spoke like the RS3.
As for alcantara, it's not simply just need cleaning, in fact it's going to make it worst. I was tempted to do the whole wheel with it, but as PetrolDave have said, it's not going to last very long with Eczema ointment all over it.chunky79 wrote:Just got to clean it that's all.PetrolDave wrote:Some owners that spec'd the alcantara wheel as OE fit said it started pilling and going shiny very quickly, not sure alcantara is durable enough on a steering wheel?
I had it done in Audi silver leather because I had other part of my interior re-trimmed. I'll post a new thread when I have it installed.
Here's a couple more photos.

Re: Flat-Bottom steering wheel flawed?
Once it's pilled and shiny, cleaning will just strip the top layer off and it will look cr*p.chunky79 wrote:Just got to clean it that's all.PetrolDave wrote:Some owners that spec'd the alcantara wheel as OE fit said it started pilling and going shiny very quickly, not sure alcantara is durable enough on a steering wheel?
