Re: RNS-E, have I bought the right version?
Thanks but nothing to do with that. Some tightarsed original owners decided not to pay for the electric mirror option at all, quite a few of us have manual labour folding mirrors! He is going to have to convert the current setup to the factory option folding mirrors, including adding in the corresponding twist back close controller I reckon.

Yes please. I'd like mine to do that also.Now when the engine is switched off the mirrors close in. When the key is put back in the ignition and moved to the first position, the mirrors open out.

Sorry gents was under the impression that the Rs6 came with electric folding mirrors as standardShoppinit wrote:^That presupposes that the car has got the mirror fold option in the first place, though, no?
At the monent my car is in with the local audi garage getting a timing belt and gearbox flush. Things have gone from bad to worse but that's a whole different thread
Once I get it back will take some pictures and mark up a wiring schematic.

Re: RNS-E, have I bought the right version?
Since I tore out the dead weight changer/tv tuner, I have the space sitting there doing nothing. I was thinking about going to one of my stereo guys and asking them to fit another sub in to that area, which would need to be amped of course. I would like more bass in the car ideally but it only needs a bit of a hand.
Any idea on how difficult they may find it to splice in to the feeds etc going to the Bose sub on the other side? Just not worth it? Just thinking out loud.

Re: RNS-E, have I bought the right version?
Sounds like a good idea to me. I don't see why it would be problem tapping into the signal from the original amp and routing it to a 2nd amp. Should in theory be really easy. The tricky bit is getting a sub enclosure into that space. I have seen a few bespoke fibreglass attempts, but TBH non of them look very pro.

Did the same mod to my own car. Managed to squeeze in a 12" MTX sub. Sound is amazing as you can turn down the bass form the other car speakers. The only consideration is the depth of the sub.
If you need any more pics let me know, I'll take them once I get the car back from the garage

Re: RNS-E, have I bought the right version?
Sorry guys, I forgot to reply to your helpful posts. After a last minute decision on friday, I now have the very latest generation RNS-E installed. NHN took the unit out of his A3 to use as Guinea Pig and removed the front from the Ebay special I bought. After a bit of tweaking well in to the evening and headscratching, the car and head unit seemed to figure out that they liked each other and everything is working exactly as expected. Even things like turning on/off with the ignition only worked after the ECU etc and the E sat in there for a while.
The price killed me a bit but I don't regret doing it at all. Twin 32GB SD card capacity, beautiful screen, surprisingly informative satnav system that is quick and the sound quality is an immediate step up to my ears.
NHN says he thinks that me saying that the bass has noticeably increased is due quite possibly to the system not adjusting the crossovers to remover lower frequencies from the speakers to let the Bose sub do all the work. There is a wire spare and he wants to put that back in to see if is the case. I have to say that I am blissfully happy with the noticeable increase in bass as it is, think I don't need another sub at all as it sits.
He soldered in every single cable I think to get the best quality connection and reduce the space needed behind the unit for all the convertors, his work and attention to detail are flawless. He would have been quicker on the conversion but he openly said that he gets to do very little A6/RS6 work due to the forums that he is known on not having many on there. You wouldn't have known for a second.

Bit confused. The one you bought from eBay is not the one you had installed?

Re: RNS-E, have I bought the right version?
Nope.
I was expecting to be having that fitted on Friday morning, but Nigel yanked the last gen RNS-E from the dash of his A3 and fitted that. Basically, this - http://www.vag-tec.com/audi/a3-1/audi-r ... on-radio-3
The front was A3 so in order to make mine up he took off the fascia from the Ebay one and transplanted it on to the newer backend.
Currently, it looks like this:
Before you hate, the gloss black screen face looks better in the flesh and I had the option to not use but I left it with the gloss surround as it visually differenciates it from the previous gen.

Re: RNS-E, have I bought the right version?
Tired so not going in to detail but this one just does things better honey:
Main differences compared with the earlier RNS-E 2G
* Improved graphics & graphics processing
* High Resolution LED screen
* Compatible with Latest RNS-E 3G AMI iPod Kit
* 32Gb SD card compatible
* Faster switching between menu's and re-calculating routes
I decided to go for it as the latest gen one looks a hell of a lot better graphics-wise, the screen is a nice leap up and it can take much higher capacity SD cards. All of that and pretty well nobody has gone this route with our beasts on this forum. When I get the other one back (which has a A3 front on it currently), it will be coded for an A3 and I will sell it as one.
I am VERY impressed with the navigation system. Didn't miss a beat and every time that I went off track on purpose it instantly recalculated without me even noticing. I don't see the TomTom ever being needed again.

Re: RNS-E, have I bought the right version?
The end bill was £1100 all in BUT, he was there from 10 until 19:30, tore a load of guff out too and with all the soldering etc etc. The car was a Guinea Pig install for him as I think I said? Any others that he does for RS6 owners would be cheaper I would expect due to the fact that the trial & error headscratching has been taken out of the equation, assuming straightforward install without extras.
You would have to have a previous gen A6 RNS-E fascia to donate for the swap though if you wanted factory fitment.
