How easy is it to fit Sat Nav

I've seen a car today which ticks all the boxes except no sat nav and has the standard Audi Concert unit.

How easy would it be to replace this with the Sat Nav unit or upgrade to the RNS-e from the later A3??

Mate, buy it - I got mine fitted (RNS-E supplied and fitted) in Manchester for £600 from a great guy. I have his number somewhere, I'll dig it out for you.

He's called Craig Barnes, top guy and lives in Manchester. Get him to add the iPhone cable and 3.5mm aux cable too. He can do TV, bluetooth and all that jazz also if you want it.

it's easy to retrofit it

1. unit - I bought a RNSe 2010+ for $1000 from ebay. Included the unit/faceplate/radio removal keys/antenna/2011 disc
2. install - I had this done in an hr...and I'm slow
3. problems - I couldn't figure out the bose wire move thing. The instructions on audiforum.us were great, but didn't apply to my car for some reason. The wire that needed to be moved was different. I sorted this and was done (that took 30 of the 60 minutes I listed as total time)


The antenna is the biggest potential pain in the ass because you are told you have 2 options...connect to sharkfin (PITA because you are messing with the headliner and interior trim etc.) or connect up in behind the gauge cluster (pretty easy but an extra 10-15 minutes of work).

The not-so-often talked about third option for placement of the antenna was to do nothing with it...just chuck it in the cavity behind the radio unit before you install it. That's what I did...and I get EXCELLENT satellite reception (same as a friend with OEM sharkfin antenna connection)

audiforum.us has a couple of great DIYs on this. Easy.

All in all, I would highly recommend you go RNSe2010+ if you can because it is a much improved unit over the older one, and I believe the cost difference is only about 200 pounds. It's worth it for the 32GB x 2 SD cards you can load up with music vs. the 4GB x 2 limit on the old RNSe. Just be careful to get the one with the faceplate that is the same as your interior trim. I've heard that some of the new-new RNSe2010+ have a more gloss finish...and you don't want that.

p.s. Don't forget to sell your Symphony II+ unit...I got $200 for mine which is about 120 pounds. There are PLENTY of B6 A4 owners who would like the Symphony 2+.

Had a couple of quotes to supply the required parts and fit for between £300 and £350.

The problem is the Concert unit is only single DIN so new parts and trim are required. Apparently the carbon trim that replace the one around the ash tray is £90.

I would consider fitting it my self, pretty confident in car audio and with the info available online I'm sure I could get it done but the 2 people I spoke to about fitting advised they would need the car for 3-4 hours. Concerned that if it takes the pros that long it may not be as straight forward as I first thought.

p.s. Don't forget to sell your Symphony II+ unit...I got $200 for mine which is about 120 pounds. There are PLENTY of B6 A4 owners who would like the Symphony 2+.

It's the concert unit mate so only single DIN

After a late night yesterday doing a lot of googling and reading I'm quite confident that I can fit this myself. It seems a bulk of the time taken to do this work is the removal of the single DIN cage and installing the Double cage as all the trim for the centre console has to come out. Have found a couple of step by step guides that show you how to do it.

The only thing I am uncertain of is the wiring. There are plenty of people selling wiring harnesses but until I get the RNS-e and take out the Concert I am unsure which harness is required.

The only thing I will need (I think) is some one with VCDS to recode the unit for me. Hopefully there is some one on the south cost that will want a few beer tokens to help me out.

Whats the score with the coding?? Am I right in thinking once it's all fitted you need to enable it in VCDS and thats it??

The fitting part I'm quite happy with just not sure what needs to be done after that.

Not quite.

You have to check/correct the coding of the RNS-E, correct the coding of the instruments (so the nav instructions display in the DIS), correct the coding of the phone module (if you have one, to enable call list and phonebook sharing), and clear the fault codes that often appear when you do the swap. Takes no more than 5 minutes, tops.
