Oil level
Oil level
My oil light came on after a spirited drive home from Portsmouth. Now, I'm surprised as I only picked up the car a little over a month ago and even though I knew the car was not serviced by the dealer I would of thought that oil level would of been part of their hundred and something multi point check to ensure the car is in tip top condition for the new owner! To be honest I don't think I have bought a secondhand car from a dealer yet that actually carried out this checks thoroughly!
Apart from a small rant, what is the oil usage like on the RS? My old 2.0ltr TFSI A4 used a fair bit between services as did my old Lean CupraR. Should I expect to be topping up the 6 or are they fairly stable on their oil?

Mine hasn't used a drop in it's 20k miles.
Re: Oil level
Makes me think that they didn't bother checking it then! I wonder why it was so low in the first place though??

Oil level
Is the oil light still on?
What does the MMI level say?
Sure it wasn't oil temp?

Re: Oil level
Oil light coming on as soon as I turn on the ignition. Deffinately not oil temp but oil level.
Just checked on the dip stick and it's half way down the 'Fill' section but as I haven't used the car all day it's stone cold. So for now I've just put a small amount in and will check once it's been warmed up and run properly.
I don't have anything in the MMI for oil as far as I could see??

Disregard the mmi bit.
I wasn't sure I these had anything on there for oil level like some do.
Oil should be checked hot, but if it's at half, unsure why the light is on... :S
Not oil pressure warning?

Re: Oil level
Ok make sense re the MMI, thought I was missing something there.
Deff oil level, even says so under the oil warning light when ignition is turned on. The level is half way down the fill section so only a quarter way up the stick in total. As you say though it should be checked when hot so I'm disregarding this for now and just put a bit in and will check properly tomorrow once I've run the car.

Saying that, when hot, the oil level will be lower on the dipstick....
Re: Oil level
I've done 4000 miles in mine since getting it and had to top up twice now. The handbook says its nothing out of the ordinary. Just don't overfill it!

Re: Oil level
The "official" method for checking oil level is to get oil to temp (100C) and then bring car to stop on level ground .. leave engine idling for 2 mins and then turn off and leave oil to settle for 2 mins and then measure .. To be honest every time I have done this the oil level still rose on the dip stick as I left it to settle more.. i found closer to 5 mins to settle before dip stick level did not change
As others said .. I'm amazed this engines uses such a little amount of oil

Re: Oil level
At last service, Audi were so kind as to change the oil to "minimum" - nothing like saving a few quid on the Castrol Edge....tight arses. Light came on within 500 miles.
Re: Oil level
Checked again when I got home after getting the temp up and leaving it for a full 5 mins to settle. Oil level was in the bottom quarter of the 'do not fill' section so just put a little more in to bring it to middle. Will keep an eye on it over the coming months but hopefully ok now.
I suspect that Tonbridge did the same tight arse top up then by just getting it to the minimum level at best

Ok, so when it says do not fill, that means do not add any oil. It has enough oil. You risk overfilling it if you add some at this point.
Also, Audi technicians put in as much as the service sheet says. No more. If it is in between the lines, it has enough oil.
If the service sheet says put in x.x litres, that is all they will put in. That's what they get taught, and that's what they charge you for. If they put more in, they are losing money.
Some may say its tight, but if they did that for every car, they would be giving a whole lot of oil away annually for freeeee......
