Fuel Gauge *Edit - It's goosed!!

Post by bud-weis » Wed May 30, 2012 8:23 pm

Is everybody else's gauge an absolute cock? :biggrin3:

I can park it up for the night with a quarter of a tank and 150miles showing on DIS, then start it up in the morning and the light comes on!

I filled it to half full yesterday and the DIS said 280miles...then slowly crept down to 180 and the back up to 220, all on a steady motorway run.

Is this normal for an RS6

mine does it all the time when it goes below 1/2, therefore the solution is to keep it all the time close to full...:)

Fuel Gauge

Post by Drummerman » Wed May 30, 2012 9:10 pm

I parked mine outside work ( on the level) and it showed quarter of a tank and about 50 miles. Went out an hour later - light was on and zero miles!! Put £20 in at the local petrol station and the gauge didn't move but the DIS said 5 miles!!!

I have my first RS6 C5, drive it everyday for about a month so far, didn't notice any issues with fuel gauge. Only bad point is, it goes towards zero very quickly, comparing to my previous diesel car. I think I'll get used to it...

Even the miles showing on DIS seem to make sense. If you drive gently, it creeps up a little, if you floor it, it drops down like a Greek GDP.

They all do this. Fill up when you get to a quarter tank and you will have no more problems.

Ok, so Wednesday evening on the way home from work the gauge is low and the DIS is telling me 40miles, so I pump £50 in and continue home about 5 miles, the gauge didn't budge at all.

So I get up in the morning and the DIS tells me I now have 10miles...i figure it's just being a cock so carry on to work expecting it to slowly rise but nothing, after about 10miles it's gone down and is now telling me I have 5 miles before empty

Despite me knowing full well I had at least 30 litres of fuel my conscience got the better of me and I stopped for more fuel, I got to 28 litres and then the pump clicks off cos I'm full! Continued to work and slooooowly it creeps up to half way.

So to cut a story short I have no idea how much fuel I have and cannot trust the gauge at all!

Next thing to do is try to fix it, does anybody have info on the fuel sender unit? Is it a normal float attached to a wire? Or did Audi employ a ridiculously expensive method requiring engine/gearbox and wallet to be completely gutted?. :biggrin3:

Could this be an easy one by any chance?

More seriously, I had this on my M3 once. Like it, the RS6 has 2 level senders and if one fails it can read half full when full.

You can test them individually. They don't look too difficult to remove. I'l look into it.

Not much information on them. You can test the resistance by unplugging them and using a multimeter. Resistance varies from 70 to 270 Ohms (empty to full respectively - i think).

They look easy enough to remove but don't remove them with the fuel tank full; Wait till it's half empty or less.

Bit confused as to the exact location of them. One seems to be clipped on the in-tank fuel pump, or in that area at least. The other one seems to be at the top of the fuel tank more towards the back of the car. Possibly accessible from the boot? You'll have to explore, unless someone who knows can chime up?

When it finally registered as full on the motorway, it was saying 385! Cruising at 70mph @ 26mpg according to the DIS.
