Dear All,
I have a small possible gearbox problem with my S4. Just drove back from London on business and when I got home, noticed a rattle in the gearbox/clutch area when the car is in motion. Not a rattle as such but a consistant tick tick tick that gets faster or slower as the revs increase and decrease. Doesn't happen in all gears, just R, 1, 2, 3, 4. Noise disappears over 3000rpm. Noise disappears totally when you disengage the clutch to change gear, hence why I think it is a gearbox problem.
You may remember me from a few post back when I had my engine taken out and the cam chains, etc replaced because of a couple of broken cam tensioners. Well, at the same time, the clutch and flywheel was replaced. This was all done by Teeside Audi and the works are under warranty. I have only done 4K since the clutch was replaced.
I am going to get onto the phone to Audi on Tuesday but wondered if anybody has any ideas. Low gearbox fluid possibly, clutch needs adjustment or the biggy, possibly a new gearbox.
Any thoughts/comments would be greatly appreciated.
All the best
Paul.
Gearbox/Clutch Rattle
Re: Gearbox/Clutch Rattle
And the answer is?
Propshaft knackered. £850 plus VAT plus fitting. Lovely! Causes a rumble when accelerating. Well documented on this and other forums.
Who said Audi's are bullet proof. I had a BMW 328 before with 130K (bought it with 80K) on the clock and never had a quibble, apart form a flat battery.
Time for somehting else methinks!!!!
Just thought I would let you all know.

Re: Gearbox/Clutch Rattle
Had some similar recently, turned out to be broken centre exhaust mounts.
Can't a specialist take a look for ya?
