Have you fitted front and rear LEDS ?

Post by victor2vt » Fri May 18, 2012 11:50 am

Could you post pictures, front and back, in the daylight and turned on in the dark, just out of interest as i've never seen a B7 with these fitted ?

Thanks

Here are some piccies. I have more but my number plate is showing still (need to blur it). The number plate shown doesn't exist anymore.

Rears lit:

LED DRL lit:

Dipped (xenon not LED) and LED sidelight (note; the LED DRL can be seen unlit):

Front Fog (LED):

I have some much better pictures but need to edit plate out still.

Making your lights white instead of an yellowish colour is hardly halford-ising... Each to their own though, it'd be boring if they all looked the same.

Whereas painting your callipers yellow and slapping Lambo Stickers on 'em would definitely fall into the Halfordising category, no subjectivity about it.

Lucky that no-one would do such a thing and post it on a forum eh?... hang on a moment....

I much prefer the led bulbs to standard. I've already changed the rear to led and front sidelights. Can you tell me which bulbs you used Mike for the front dtr and front fogs? Did you have to use resistors?

The DRLs and front fogs are the only ones that give me bulb errors. Both claimed to be error free but with the usual disclaimer that they don't work for every car. There was no writing on the packaging to verify the websites claim of error free bulbs. I didn't add resistors, instead I am putting up with the errors until I find a set that works.
I can't remember where I got them from as I bought loads of bulbs from several different places in the hope that one set might actually work. I think I bought most of my bulbs from HIDS direct and autobulbsdirect.

Unfortunately I think it's highly unlikely you'll ever find DRL or fog light bulbs that don't throw up an error on their own - as I understand it, the bulb fault "sensor" in the car is a fairly simple system that works by sending a brief pulse to the bulbs to see if they're drawing a current - if there's no current it assumes no bulb / failed bulb. The load that both the DRL and fog LED bulbs draw are so low in comparison to filament bulbs that the system doesn't detect a current - hence adding a resistor is the only reliable way to fool the system, by adding a higher current draw into the light circuit. I think that the "error free" bulbs just have a small resistor built in so the bulbs take a bit more current. I can only think that the Audi system isn't very sensitive, hence it doesn't pick up that small current.

With the side lights it's slightly different because quite a few of the 5w wedge LEDs out at the moment draw a fair bit of current, so the system notices them - I've tried quite a few "error free" side light bulbs and even they didn't work though, and in the end the ones that worked were very high light output ones (from Ultraleds) that weren't even marketed as being error free.

I've been through this on a trial and error basis several times because I really did want to have LEDs up front to both make the DRLs more effective (crisper light hopefully more noticeable to others) and generally make it look better - so yesterday I spent several hours wiring in resistors for the DRLs and mounting them on a metal bracket do they don't melt anything important
