Help please.... Update P5. She's back :)
Re: Help please.... No turbos :(. Update pg 2
I thought this was due to a broken manifold, can oil starvation cause this?
No matter where you go, there you are.
Re: Help please.... No turbos :(. Update pg 2
if it is the manifold that has caused the failure then they can collapse and turn so causing high egts and turbos to pop originally - then the manifolds got worse and broke and caused it to seize.

Re: Help please.... No turbos :(. Update pg 2
Thanks for the replies.
Fingers crossed the turbos/manifolds will be removed over the weekend. If the manifolds are at fault then i've got some standard ones sorted thanks to Luke.
I'm trying to keep costs to an absolute minimum. I'm currently setting up a business, just bought a house, spent a sh!t load on extending it etc so funds are very low. If all goes well with the self employed route/new business, i'll be spending a good whack on getting more power out of this beast. It's all a bit uncertain at present, a bit scary to be honest.
I'm not sure what to do re the gearbox. When Kim (QST) worked on the car last he told me to leave it as it is and keep driving it until it fails as it was driving fine and rarely fails to engage into reverse. He said it could go on for a long time and it wouldn't damage anything else when it does completely give up. I'm thinking I may just leave it for now. But if I do decide to fix it, the ZF sounds the best to me.
Ben, the turbos were changed about 5k miles ago/1 year ago. But I think used units were used (apparently off a low mileage car). At the same time; the timing belt, water pump, thermostat, MAFs and a whole load of other stuff was done. There's a reciept for a good £6k spent IIRC. The gearbox was meant to be have been done by Mr Transmission at the same time IIRC.
What would I be checking re oil starvation?

Re: Help please.... No turbos :(. Update pg 2
Haven't managed to take it apart mate.
It's parked up in my drive and will be for a while. Too many other commitments at the moment unfortunately. As much as I love the car, need to be grown up for a change and spend the money wisely (the business comes first this time
sh!t man! I'm sounding like an old man
)
As soon as things settle down, i'll get the car taken apart to see exactly how much damage has been done. I think used manifolds and reconditioned turbos will be the most likely solution.
For now i'm running a proper banger as a workhorse (a mates old Peugeot 306!
- can't believe I just admitted to that hah), but I regularly drive my brothers E39 M5 so I get my dose of power when needed

Re: Help please.... No turbos :(. Update pg 2
Quick update guys....
Engine has been taken out, manifolds & turbos have been removed.
One manifold is broken on the inside (see pic), the other seems fine.
One turbo is seized and the other is spinning - i'll be sending them of for a re-con.
Any ideas what would cause the turbo to seize (the blades seem fine)

Re: Help please.... No turbos, Update pg 4 turbos/manifolds
Porbably bits of manifold jammed in there somewhere. Wouldn't take much of an impact to bend the blades and cause them to jam against the body.
Where's this photo then?

Would the turbo blades not break?

Re: Help please.... No turbos, Update pg 4 turbos/manifolds
I think your only concern is whether the turbo has seized from oil starvation. This is the second set of turbos on the car now, so it's a legitimate concern. The bearing journals will tell you the story of what's gone on there, but it's a bit of a coincidence that the manifold's broken AND a seized turbos. Occam's razor and all that.

Re: Help please.... No turbos, Update pg 4 turbos/manifolds
I would have thought you would see some kind of damage to the blades. Was there oil up to the seized turbo Sid?

I'm assuming that the seized turbo is on the side that the mani is broked?
