Thanks for the write-up Gareth much appreciated, seems as long as you get the thing set-up well then it's a no brainer! You would never slot the gears home as quick as you do in your video with a standard shifter.

I've had 2 short shifters in the past and I know what to expect and I’m prepared to accommodate a little notchiness for the sake of wrist flicking gear changes...

My only problem with short shifters is that you're trading shift speed for synchro wear.
The faster and harder you shift the more stress and wear the synchros have to deal with.
I've tried a few in other cars and tbh never got on with them.
I do however go for solid linkages - on one car I had the bloody linkage was made up of pins and r clips. When you got it out of the car it just rattled with slack. Replaced it with one piece machines alumininium with double bearings. Like night and day.

Oh, I'd agree - you get out what you put in when setting up.
I spent 4 hours on one install fine tuning and was worth it.

Thanks for your input adsgreen. The main thing I dislike about the standard setup is the slop in the gearstick it just waggles around in your hand and like you said by just tightening everything up in the linkages, improvements would be very noticeable. I was out this afternoon driving one of my favourite roads and the gear change speed is definitely the weak point, although my RS doesn’t suffer from any other gearbox problems I’ve read about even when cold, so I know I've got a good one.

One of the things about the JHM short shifter is it replaces the loose plastic ball joint which other s/shifters don't, the trio package though goes one step further in replacing the linkage onto the gearbox further reducing slop, but this part is not reversible and sounds quite involved so I think just the basic s/shifter will do for me. I'm very mechanically sympathetic so I won't be slotting gears home so hard as to damage the synchros. I just like everything to work perfectly and efficiently, so changes are needed :audibash:

it seems I must have been fortunate - my mechanic took only one hour to instal and it seems perfect., and I don't believe he's done one of these before

Very fortunate...or you've got a very good mechanic!

There are a couple of JHM suppliers in the UK, im sure if you drop either of them an email they will be more than happy to help and offer a better price than importing yourself.

I have contacted MRC on here, no reply. A forum member who has contacts has given a quote but that's it.

Anyone else you know of? So far it's cheaper to order direct even with duty/vat & handling charge. Everyone wants their cut of course.
