Can't wait for Ian to finish baking my XP10 front pads!

Post by Mr Footlong » Sat Mar 31, 2012 7:58 pm

Well, it has now got to the point today where the Mintex front pads are scaring both me and madam.Close to home, last stretch of Dual Carriageway and plebos all sitting in the fast lane doing 60, slow lane empty. Waited and waited but after nobody pulled over I dropped a cog and went around the lot of them, reaching about warp factor 9.7 or so. After going back in to the fast lane I had to pull in towards the end of the stretch, had to plant the anchors a fair bit to shed speed while indicating/pulling in, which would normally have been a prefectly safe manouvre.

While I had done this a few times with the Mintex pads without much confidence before, today was the nail in the coffin. The car was heavily "squirreling" under braking as I call it, or weaving as you would probably call it, freaked madam out a treat. I could possibly put this down to a funky piston/caliper or something but I don't believe this is the case, I just think that these shat-for-anything-other-than-standard-driving pads are fit for the bin and nothing else. Just my opinion guys, don;t taake it as a dig if you are happy Mintex users.

I ordered my set of Carbotech XP10 pads from Ian at Carbotech Europe last week and he was baking them as of this weekend so I am hoping to get them this week and oh good god, they cannot come fast enough!!!!! Unless the calipers are borked then I am pretty well certain that these will sort the majority of my braking problems but if I have to eat humble pie down the road, I certainly will and will let you guys know. Yes they may cost the same price as a half decent flat screen tv but it is my life and others I am talking about.

I will be happier than a pig in the proverbial if I can actually put 100% confidence in to stopping this barge properly when I need to. The Mintex are ok for any low speed stuff or if you are braking with plenty of notice but if you are any sort of properly spirited 'cough' driver I simply cannot recommend these pads in an way, shape, mean or form. Had them on for almost 4 months now so I have given them a perfectly fair run and the discs are perfectly bedded in.

Got to agree with you, hence my desire to upgrade pads also, the brakes arent becoming of a car with 450bhp..

Too much flaff for me and too many private reports back to me now of people warping the C6 discs on these setups. If Grizz was closer so if I had problems I could easily go up there then perhaps, but I don't live close and I don't want to force Doug Etc in to supporting a setup they might not recommend or really want to. Will see how these go and also possibly stick them on the back if I need just a bit more oomph. After that we are talking four pot conversion on the rear then and then possibly uprated calipers on the front but I will be staying with C5 discs for the forseeable.

Where did you get your c5 discs from and what did they set you back, checking out MOVIT at mo and my german speaking days were back at GCSE level but it appears they are 1000 euros which isnt bad at all and thats for 380x32 4 piston rears..

have to agree ... had mintex pads on my TTqS which was only 1,390kg and they were beyond <beep> ! almost set on fire after the smallest bit of spirited driving ... switched to Ferodo DS2500 and suddenly the car was good for 25mins sessions at Brands Hatch !

I got both my front and rears via Rob (Dsgwagen on Ebay). He also supplied the OE rear pads too. £550 for the front discs, £60 for the rear pads and £449 for the rear discs. Some prices included delivery and others didn't.

Rob said to me at the end of November that he stopped actively stocking them as they weren't selling nearly as well as they used to and he actually sourced the fronts for me from somewhere if memory serves. Really helpful guy.

Cheers mate, building up a source of contacts at the mo for my little baby..dont need fronts as they were only changed in october of last year, i`m beginning to think its overkill to change all 4 discs given the age of the fronts and just to put MOVIT on the rears only seems a bit stupid, but i`m no mechanic and am willing and keen to be advised, will give him a tinkle..i`m thinking new OEM rear discs but ferodo pads all round.

The DS2500 are good but on a track day last week in a scooby we lunched a set of brand new pads. That's £200 for 1 day and approx 60 miles of driving. And that's a light car - relatively speaking.

the last place the barge belongs is on a racetrack, its a motorway monster, thats its habitat.

So what do you need better brakes for? Mintex are fine from stopping from 150 once.

I have needed to stop quickly on several occasions, not may I add on account of my own stupidity or carelessness but because of other prats on the road and the current brakes dont inspire confidence, Its easy to lose track of just how fast you are travelling and sometimes you need to stop quickly and the car has behaved in exactly the same way footlong describes..

Xp10 should give you a mighty set of anchors!

Would you mind keeping me posted on disk wear Mr Footlong? My car will be needing stoppers soon, and I'm trying to weigh up options other than the OEM pagid RS 422 or my fave rs14

Ceveman73 has reported back to me with no discernible increase in disc wear rate so far. Another day, another trip out in the car with at least 1 stop where I was clenching my teeth! Come on Ian, daddy needs his pads! :D

I can guarantee that you'll love them. They are night and day compared to Mintex. They really come into their own when you're really going for it. As I said to you, make sure you update the fluid though, as you'll find your pedal goes soft after repeated high speed stops with the amount of friction these bad boys generate! :D

Looking fwd to your write up when you've run them in properly.

Mart.
