Emissions Light has come on! Solved

Post by DavidRS4 » Sun Mar 18, 2012 7:13 pm

Emissions light came on earlier whilst out for a drive. The car now sounds like a Subaru Impreza at idle and whilst driving, feels like it's being driven over large cobble stones and shakes the car like mad. Power has seriously decreased. Feels like it has gone into limp mode. The emissions light is permanently on. It's fine on run down. Needless to say I won't be driving it.

Thank god I bought it from an Audi Dealership and it's only 2 months into it's warranty.

I'll phone the dealership up tomorrow and get it booked in.

Any idea what the problem could be? Coil pack? Is this a common problem?

Many thanks,
David

There are literally hundreds of fault codes that can cause it to go into limp mode, without knowing what fault codes the engine ECUs are showing any attempt at diagnosis would be guessing in the dark.

Do you have VCDS?

I don't have VCDS Dave; sounds like it could be anything from a long list of things.

Sounds like a coil pack.

There was a service campaign (28E9) to replace all suspect coil packs, so anyone who is having coil pack issues should check whether that service campaign has been carried out on their car.

Not sure it's in limp mode Danny, but it feels gutless, not that I have taken it abve 3k rpm since it started playing up

Thanks Dave for the info on the coilpack update.

Love this place as there's such a wealth of nice people with plenbty of information that they don't mind sharing

Coil pack or vacuum hose likely suspects to check first.
You don't need VCDS to read the obd code and that will give you a good idea to start with (and only 20 quid or so)

Coil pack, I took mine for a bath last week and as soon as I pulled out, code came up and power was cut in half. In fact it would not allow the engine to rev north of 2k rpm. I shut it down, pulled the negative terminal off the battery(it's in the trunk, sorry the boot) and reconnected. No code, no issue. It's been running fine since. In fact, we hit just north of 180mph this morning and my was car grinning bigger than I was. :biggrin3:

Thank you to all you guys for the diagnosis. It was a faulty coil pack. All under warranty, which is a result.

Many thanks
