How do the reading lights compare? Similar brightness?

Just to check do they dim up and down too?

Thanks Dunc, I think that is worth trying so will swap out tomorrow. Ringo, I haven't tried them for reading but like the door lights, these are weaker compared to the standard wedge etc bulbs. Just went outside so can confirm that they too dim on/off like the rest of them. Slightly different shade to the big LEDs but a hell of a lot closer then the old ones. I am considering buying some more to see if I can get a closer match.

Pick up the footwell housing from Audi on Saturday. Realised that I forgot the glovebox light.... Another little wedge one but am going to cut the brackets out and solder a proper 3LED one in there, not that the glovebox light is working currently....
If that works well then I may write off an afternoon and butcher the 8 door ones too.

Glove box light is retarded. The side lights have to be on for it to light up when you open the glovebox door.

I really want brighter ones for the interior door handle lighting, the red just needs to be slightly brighter IMO.

Hmm, is the glovebox one even switched then or is it just on all the time when the sides are do you know?

Yeah, I can imagine you twitching as the LED light shines out through the cracks around the glovebox door. :)

Fortunately it is switched. :)

I think I'll rewire it next time I'm in there because it irritates me having to turn the side lights on to see what's in the glovebox. I've already got an 75X feed in there anyway for the GPS repeater.

Thanks :)

Twitching resolved:

Left - The standard one found in the glovebox, passenger footwell, 4 in the bottoms of the doors and 4 red ones in the doors.

Right - same light but with the guts dremeled out and LED soldered in.

Not my finest work and I don't think I can be bothered to do another 8 but I may well do the 4 bottom door ones.

Nice :) Now you just have to hope that those bulbs don't need replacing as often as the other ultraleds ones. :)

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Damnit, peaked my curiosity. I had heard mention of this on one or 2 blogs but what have you seen/heard and are we talking more headlight/prolonged use ones that you are aware?

I would contemplate some of the expensive premade ones on Ebay but despite the look of the light assemblies, they all say they are for Canbus versions and come with an addon power cable as well as the normal connector that ours has.

Ok, I had so many bulbs left over that I got mum around and decked her A6 Avant out with new bulb all round instead of returning them. I took the 42mm front double ones out of mine to give her as much light as poss so now need to order some new ones. Thinking I will try some even brighter ones for a chuckle - http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/264-9L ... DSHB9.html - should be the brightest, having 9 LEDs on them or then I could just try these - http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/42mm-festoon ... -2190.html

I both hate and love being so bloody anal about what must seem like the most insignificant thing to change!

I have swapped the numberplate ones to 3LED ones now too.

Another 'fascinating' post, cough.

To give a fair comparison in case some want the 6LED ones and want to see the difference, here are the same style photos, but with the 3LED ones in like the other guys

Only doing this to help build a reference thread for this sort of thing. Feel free to tell me to stop and I will keep these silly little mods to myself.

Ringo, update to this. As I said earlier, they do dim in/out with locking unlocking but aren't as bright as the old school bulbs in there. Was out last night so played with the reading lights and found that when the headlights etc are on, a lower voltage must be applied to the circuit for the reading lights as when turning them on without the main interior lights, they are dim and flicker, as if being fed borderline initialization voltage. However, when headlights etc aren't on they run at normal voltage regardless of nightlights when the main interior lights are on.

I bought them mostly to be a closer match to the main LED lighting than to actually be of use as I personally would never use them but now you know anyway ;)

Got the matched light from Camberley Audi, part number P A331 947 113 (expect to pay about £11 before any loyalty discount), cut out the recessed housing out in the roof of the footwell (only the width, length of the hole is perfect), then made up a quick bodge plug as had to go out. Not pretty but perfectly functional and safe:
P1010339.JPG
The hot glue makes the connectors 100% solid so you can push in/pull out from the existing plug as needed. Had to pull the existing plug lead out of one of the little cable guide clips inside there as I made the cables on the adaptor a bit short but it all fits perfectly and the passenger footwell is now a perfect match to the driver footwell and my life is twitch-free, for now ;)

I have to order some more bulbs so might put up a revised list of bulbs used later on this week and hopefully will have the time to mod the 8 door ones......
