Shell V Power

Post by Shoppinit » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:54 am

Having discovered that Tesco 99 uses ethanol to bring up the octane values (bad for engine), I thought Shell V power would be the best choice because it's 100% petrol...

...or so I thought. Then I came across this from the FBHVC:
In the last issue of the newsletter we stated that Shell V-Power petrol was guaranteed not to contain ethanol. Just before this newsletter went to press we have discovered that this is no longer the case. Their statement says: ‘Shell, like many other fuel suppliers, has begun blending ethanol into some Unleaded grades, including Shell V-Power at Stanlow, to comply with the legal obligations of the RTFO’ (Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation)
http://fbhvc.co.uk/2010/02/01/fbhvc-new ... no-1-2010/

Don't want none of that effinol in me motor!

BUT I can't find anything to back up what the FBHVC is claiming.

Anyone have any info one way or the other?

What exactly is so bad about ethanol for our engines?

CRIKEY, I'm glad i read this! i've been advised that shell is the only fuel to use, but it looks like Amar has the only solution..bp ultimate.

i never knew shell used ethanol, and never knew it was bad for our engines, you learn something new every day! :jump_clap:

I think we're screwed whatever we do now. It's my understanding that the government is trying to get ethanol in all petrol, if that's not already the case.

They are going to keep upping the content to 10% next, but was under the impression was for the regular fuel i.e. not the Super stuff.

I've been using Tesco99 since I bought mine. Shell V-Power have always been 2p more and was originally only 98RON. BP Ultimate as far as I'm concerned is a complete rip off, only being 97RON and always about 5p more then V-Power. I've also found that on the odd occation I've had to use BP Ultimate it doesn't last very long compared to Tesco99. You'll find that all of the fuels now contain at least 5% biofuel, that is always going to increase over time.

I wouldn't use tesco to begin with due to the horror stories about the b5 s4/rs4 lads having the fuel lines failing. After talking to Doug he said it was happening with other fuel type's, he also said that cars running on tesco 99 got better figures on the dyno. So more power and less money (about 7p a litre) means tesco 99 wins.
I have tried bp 97 and v bastard for 3 months at a time and to be honest not found much difference in power but the wife thinks she was getting less miles out of the v bastard.
