noise on full lock

Post by vmaxed » Sat Feb 04, 2012 11:46 am

advice needed, when reversing out of my drive i get a scraping noise on full lock also when going forwards it feels like the tyre is coming off? its not touching the inside of the arch anywhere almost feels like when i had a Nissan Navara when four wheel drive was engaged when you were on full lock its almost like your pushing the tyres rather than them steering i have the H&R spacers front and rear do you think it could be the front spacers? did not notice this when i first fitted them a few months ago, what does the car drive like with just the rear spacers/ anyone experienced this? by the way its a RS4 B7 Cab and the tyres have only a few miles left in them

Mine does this same thing, but only ever coming out my drive on full lock, wouldn't worry about it. Feels like the inside tyre juddering, or the diff / cv joints juddering when its on the lock stop

I know what your saying and i too have experienced this many times in different cars when on full lock its more the pump, this is different its coming more from the wheels like the car is going forward straight but the wheels are turned so its trying to push the tyre from the wheel, of course its not but thats what it feels like it never used to do it and it drives perfect the rest of the time

Yeah my 205 GTi power steering pump whirs like mad on full lock! The Audi though is a definite judder as you say (not the pump) which I have always presumed was the diff or cv joints. The Audi has quite a castor at the front which reduces the tyre contact patch when on full lock

They are big tyres and wheels that are cold and the inner circle wheel is on a greater lock so when cold it will drag rather than steer. Mine have sounded in the past like it is popping off but when all up to temp it never repeats the sensation.

Mine does it too. Don't they call it 'Quattro Bind' or something. My old S3 was the same...

I hate to say this, but I also had similar, put it down as a quattro "characteristic" but as soon as I had the DRC fixed it went away

Mine does it when cold when on full or 3/4 lock it feels as if the front outer wheel is being pushed sideways as it grips to pull it forward (juddering effect), I too have put this down to four wheel drive characteristic as it goes when all up to temp.

Ah not saying im glad you all have it but its nice to know thats its more common, i have had the car about 8 months and just cant recall it doing it before i thought it might be something to do with fitting the spacers ah well fork out for a new set of tyres then ouch!

It'll be more pronounced with the cold weather and the rubber being less pliable as a result. As you bought it 8 months ago you have never had the car at the temps we are experiencing presently.

Mine does it too, it was terrible when the tyres were worn but putting new Vreds on cured it almost totally. I'm fully expecting it to reappear once they start to wear though. I have no symptons (yet) of DRC issues so I've always put it down as a characteristic of these cars - four wheel drive and big tyres! The fact that so many other people get it too seems to confirm that.

I never noticed the judder on my RS4 Cab buts it's quite bad on my R8.I'm not sure if it's exactly the same thing but this bulletin relates to the R8
