Average Speed Cameras?

Post by DazN » Mon Jan 23, 2012 10:04 am

Driving along the M62 in my RS4 last night there's 3 average speed camera checks and the signs say 50mph. I have my cruise set at 50 ish but I'm really surprised at the amount of people who come flying past and the brake when they see the cameras.

Don't they understand what 'average' means? The cameras must catch 1,000's of people?

you would hope it does

but i bet it doesnt

yet ALL my speeding points (x3, x6 and a course) have been by SPECS - so i respect and obey

LIFE IS UNFAIR

but then i get to drive an R8, so it could be worse ! LOL

I saw a ricer playing some sort of truck hopping game once, it looked fun so I joined in. He'd match speed next to a long lorry when passing the SPECS camera point, thus 'hiding' from the camera. Then he'd floor it like a maniac until he could line up another truck to hide alongside for the next set of SPECS. It was fun for a bit but then I made up a much more sordid game...
I now bang 45 into the cruise control, then I whip my meat out and wait for a chick to slowly move past. If I spot a decent one I speed match her and then rub one out whilst trying to make eye contact. It passes the time, otherwise those SPECS zone are just far too boring.

Can say without a shadow of doubt the average speed cameras (50mph) on the M25 between jct 20-23 are fully operational!!
Was caught averaging 59mph at 2am in the morming a couple of weeks ago (daily commute to work)

2am Gentleman!! :bash: From what little i remember i think it was just me and my thoughts on a complete empty Motorway :boohoo:

Fair cop guilty as charged!! Who needs the rozzers when big brother is static and ready for fools like me...

ps: the average speed cameras on the M1 between jct 10-14 are also in operation...

i always set speedo to gps speed, so maybe they have done the same.
Money can't buy you love, but it can buy you a well sorted racecar

always been wary of specs after seeing how it works, its a bloody ridiculous system that sees drivers starring at the speedo and not the road, why i always have cruise control now

anyone been brave enough to test out the lane changing myth?

We have used these or some of our work sites. They are brilliant for keeping my workforce safe but horrendous as they are not flexible in terms of hours of use (we don't need them on at night). Changing lanes is a myth (or so we have been informed) you will get an enforceable ticket.

There is a weak point that nobody has challenged yet afaik, that is the cameras should automatically calibrate by calling back to a central time keeping 'clock'. Apparently this is not recorded or may not always occur due to any number of reasons. This process of calibration and how often it occurs is the weak link from what we gathered.

Edit: I am referring to temporary average speed cameras obviously!

What makes you think I don't have the same 'problem'? In fact, it's my glowing purple knob that attracts their attention in the first instance, like one of those deep sea angler fish. Then their wide eyes dart nervously up to meet mine, I see the horror and disgust in their face, then POW! Crusty headlining. Bam_bam is chilling in the afterglow and is somewhat placated for the next couple of miles...
Seriously though, SPECS zones are horrible, nasty things, we need to do what we can to pass the time and keep our sanity. I've noticed on many occasions that a couple minutes into an average speed check zone, other road users start to struggle keeping in lanes, people get tired and loose focus at these speeds, especially after engaging cruise control, these zones are deadly boring. Minds tend to wander. So play the bam_bam game!

ha ha.. 'glowing purple' my :assflash:
but true in respect of concetration out of the window. Can you imagine if you don't have cruise control? That would mean eyes peeled constantly on the ' speedo'

That is a fair point RsKiwi, calibration is a way out ?!

Does it hurt being gay three months at a time?

You seem to be alternating between S4s and TTaRSe. What's next?
