Not sure what I've got!

Post by pseunomis » Fri Jan 06, 2012 3:16 pm

Hi all,

Picked up my 06 RS4 Cab last week and I am totally blown away by it. Best thing I have done in a long time :D

Thing is, I am a bit puzzled by the sport mode - or lack of it!

It has the sport button and pressing it causes the light in the dash to come on - but not a great deal else.

The throttle response is possibly a bit sharper, but if it is, it's very subtle. From what I have managed to search on here, that's possibly about right, but it does seem a bit strange, coming from a 997, which was verging on schizophrenic.

The car has a Milltek fitted, but I don't know which one - and I don't know how to tell (even after looking at their website). The car does sound pretty wild even with the button not pressed and doesn't get any noisier with it pressed, so I am guessing its a non-valved version. Not sure of it is resonated. It does drone if I drive it in 4th at 30mph, if that helps ...

The seat bolsters don't move and there is no option in the menu to change this. (The seats are pretty regular looking except for the leather and the RS4 logo.)

So I'm guessing that the exhaust sounds the same in either mode due to the Milltek; the seats don't move because they aren't meant to; and I can't spot the difference in the throttle response due to general incompetence.

Sound about right? Any other advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Simon

Well it certainly sounds like you have a non valved version, alot arent keen on these as you dont have the option to make it quiter
but why would you want to.I have a non res.
Also the seats only tighten in slightly on the bolsters and sides but its subtle, maybe yours are not holding the air.You do
have buckets i take it ?

Also the sport button does not add to the power just the throttle responce i think
Drive low,park lower

Exhaust - get on your knees and look up the tail pipe. Can easily see the valve mech about 6" or so. Note - done owners unplug them to get loud mode all the time.
As for res/non res - put it in 4th at about 20mph and floor it. If the noise is deafening then non res (noise should go at over 2.2k rpm). if bearable then res.

Sport mode - all it does is different throttle pedal map, exhaust values open (only above 3k rpm in gears 1-3) and bucket side bolsters.

As for the seats, i have mine disabled via the interface menu, sounds like yours could be, or perhaps they're leaking?

I also have non-res, non-valved milltek, so don't feel any appreciable difference when pressing the sport button either!

SPOT ON

re. the throttle, best to get a health check done on the car to make sure there are no vacuum leaks causing loss of power

you could be down to 360PS when you should be running 380 - 390PS

try MRC Tuning

If your seats look a bit like these then the bolsters won't inflate.
Image

Look underneath the back bumper as mentioned above, the valved one will have these on each side.
There should also be a black hose running to each one - make sure they're connected both at the valve end and trace back to behind the bumper to make sure they're connected at the 90 elbow. (You'll need to get on your back and slide under the car but should manage without jacking it up)

Image

Non valved will have 2 plain pipes exiting the backbox to form the oval.

The resonated exhaust will have these, can like shrouds in the middle section.

This is my non-valved, non-res before it was fitted:

Go into the DIS (Press Set) on the steering wheel (assuming flat bottomed), keep pressing set until you get menu choices - you need to select the 'down' arrow on the list (using +/- buttons) and you'll see 'Sports Seat' with a square. That square should have a tick in it. If it doesn't, scroll down (+/-) and hit Set so a tick appears. Now find your way back out of the menu - start the car and press the 'Sport button' - your seats should close around you. You can test them by reaching your right hand down the side of the seat, you'll find two toggle switches - pull both UP and the seat will close around you whether sports seat is selected or not (IF YOU HAVE BUCKET SEATS!). This will show if it's working (think you need the engine on though) - hope this helps.

With the Zorst - if you sit on the driveway at idle and open your window - when you press the Sports button the noise should be noticeably louder (you may hear the 'clicking' as the valves open) - if it is then you have a 'valved' zorst, if not then it's either not valved (ie. constant thunderous loudness) or the valves are stuck - if the valves our stuck there's another thread running about how to free them.

Thanks everyone: this is fantastic stuff. Can't believe how helpful people are over here!

Judging by Pie's pictures, I don't have bucket seats and therefore the bolsters are presumably static.

I'll get underneath tomorrow, have a fumble around and report back on the exhaust.

RS4 seats come in two flavours (excluding trim and colour combos); buckets and non-buckets.

Buckets look like this:

Image

Upper and lower bolsters (rib cage and thighs) can be inflated manually or automatically if the S button is pressed (driver side only). The S button inflation can be switched off.

Buckets are manually adjusted (forward, back up and down)

Non buckets - Comfort sport seats (I think thats what they're called?) don't have inflatable bolsters but are fully electrically adjustable.

Thanks, Pie. I definitely have the first ones. The buckets look pretty impressive - are they very comfortable? (I have had similar seats before and they were great - despite being rock hard.)

I think my bum got big because I feel clamped in by the buckets and not in a good way!

OK, possibly going to make myself look very very stupid now but i swear the suspension also firms up when the sports button is pressed!

No mate, but we've all made that mistake. Three things happen with the 'S' button - Throttle remap (first 3rd travel now gives you two thirds of traditional throttle movement - this is a pain, even Clarkson thought so and useless except on track), Bucket seats close around DRIVER ONLY (if activated in the DIS and to the amount you last set on the seat yourself - two switches on the right hand lower side of seat) and valves open in exhaust (but close above 1500 rpm in first 3 gears but open and stay open in 4, 5 and 6).

It's not the suspension that stiffens with the 'S' button pressed - it's you mate!
