Tyre scrubbing?
Tyre scrubbing?
I find that when i make a hard turn right the tyre seems as though it is getting really scrubbed and found that there is wear on the outside edge. When i do a hard left turn it does not have the same effect/scrubbing noise. You can really hear the tyre scrubbing on right lock is this normal, i am going to fit 4 Tyres next week (Bridgestones @ £245 each are they ok? on this car) All the tracking has been checked and is ok.

Re: Tyre scrubbing?
Tracking (ie toe settings) might be ok, but is sounds as though your camber is out (not enough negative (or even positive) camber on that side).colmac wrote:I find that when i make a hard turn right the tyre seems as though it is getting really scrubbed and found that there is wear on the outside edge. You need someone who can check camber as well as toe settings.

Hi there, I have just joined up to this forum as I have exactly the same problem.
On full right hand down hard lock or even 3/4 lock to the right, I can feel the tyres scrubbing, then a noticable bumping noise that is felt through the feed back of the steering wheel.
Also, when reversing on a hard lock, right habd down again, a metal clonking sound was made, but this since has disappeared after servicing, and may have been because of low power steering fluid!
Likewise, on a rather twisting road, the set up and sure footedness of the car does not feel right for a 4wd.
Yesterday I hade the car at Newcastle Audi Scotswood Road, for service 60K, and the technician took the car for a test drive. He admitted he could hear and feel the noticable scrubbing and bump grind noise on full lock etc, and could only offer that because the wheels are big 19 inch, it is the tyres scrubbing, and thats normal!!!!!!,,,,I must admit I NEARLY WET MYSELF with laughter.
On servicing the car, I was advised that 1 f the shock absorbers was weeping and a vacuum test will need to be done, and a possible re-charge of the shocks, £100.
Then if that doesnt cure the problem, a laser wheel & geometry alignment check is required. Cost, they didnt say.
By the way, I had asked them to check all of the suspension bushes and arms as part of the service, which they said was all ok.

5mm of tread on the front tyres, they were brand new in July, garage I bought car from had them fitted at 250 a corner, so its definetly not the tyres.
Although as I have been searching through the RS4 B7 forum, the right hand down full lock clonking problem is near epidemic proprtions, I was quite astonished as per how may have had this problem.
A weeping suspension is looking good at the moment as being the root cause, mmaybe with some tightening of suspension bolts, steering rack etc.
I think its gonna be a case of eliminating the cause piece meal.

Re: Tyre scrubbing?
I came across this thread on a search.....
Ive had my car for almost 5mths, done 7000+ miles and love it.
One issue I have is the front tyre wear which looks almost like there is positive camber on both fronts....!?
Just before I bought the car, the front DRC were replaced by watford Audi, (at my request after finally convincing the dealer that the loud banging wasnt the rear boot hatch....
) so I would have thought the geometry would be correct leaving Audi?
There was new rear tyres fitted also so now the fronts are worn quite a lot more than the rears, which is what i was putting the scrubbing and ctr diff slipping noise as i turn hard right out of my drive......
Cant imagine the camber could be so wrong yet dont believe this could be normal even for this nose-heavy bus

Re: Tyre scrubbing?
Ok...
I have the same problem and this has just started on mine.
Just been in for a service and the tyres scrub on full lock. Got 4mm of tread on all 4 !
I am sure it did not happen before this week and i have had it 6 months and cover 10000 miles.
Have no idea !!!

Re: Tyre scrubbing?
What tyres do you have?
Weather has changed alot recently and summer tyres will feel very different in cold temperatures and could cause scrubbing.
Are you sure you have the XL version of the tyres?
Pressures all correct (again, they'll be dropping in this weather)?
Full lock does do weird things with the 4wd.

Re: Tyre scrubbing?
I had this too. I have a an almost full lock 90degree right turn to get out of my garage and up my drive (which is also very steep which doesn't help). When the tyre tread got low (Conti SC3s), they scrubbed like a mad thing every time. Yesterday the new Vreds went on and hey presto no more scrubbing.

Re: Tyre scrubbing?
I don't know the cause but this isn't something that only happens on the RS4, it happened on the 2 B6 S4s I had beforehand - once the tyres get low you can feel the tyres reacting badly (blocking, scrubbing, whatevere you want to call it) on turns approaching ful lock.KernowPete wrote:I had this too. dont think its anything to worry about, mine has just started doing this when i reverse out of my drive on a bit of a slope with almost full lock, seems to have started since the temps have got down to 0 deg,i would normally be concerned about this but the new 3.2 mk2 tt i had new did it and the new tts i had also did it,i think its more likely going to be connected to cold oil in the diffs and gearbox but i would say that if your tyres are wearing uneven then get them checked out,my rs4 has 10.000mls with the origional pirelli's and have 5mm tread left across the full width of the tyres with no signs of scrubbing

Re: Tyre scrubbing?
Blimey! My RS4 came with the Pirellis as OE fitment and I wore them out in 9000 miles - even wear across the whole width of the fronts and rears. I didn't like the lack of grip from the Pirellis in the wet either, so they're never going near my RS4 again.eightfoot wrote:my rs4 has 10.000mls with the origional pirelli's and have 5mm tread left across the full width of the tyres with no signs of scrubbing
