Re: anyone changed a starter motor???
probably one of the secrets beside the gearbox out without taking out the engine...which are many rumours about, but never told how to...

Re: anyone changed a starter motor???
Yeah, thought about flame cutting the starter out and adding a cranking handle off a morris minor instead...... radiators stopped that downgrade....
I used alot of stands 6 off and 2 trolley jacks. This is how I did it, may be completely the wrong way but it worked......
get car on stands as high as possible, or if you can get it on a lift even easier....
Disconnect battery
sink a couple of lagers for courage
remove the belly pan
remove intercooler lower pipe and hose
remove oil filter
remove oil hose from the engine side that runs across starter motor (plug as it drips in your ear........) and tie to the side
plug all hoses etc as you go
remove filter box, plug inlets and support engine at the front using a beam across the struts and a wire sling through the lugs.
remove anti roll bar brackets ( gives better access to starter)
trolley jack under the subframe
remove subframe bolts and slowly lower the whole assy down a few inches until you can get a long bar with uni joint onto the upper starter bolt (its in from transmission side)
put stands under the assembly before lying underneath the engine (safety first)
Remove starter cable (its not easy even at this point, ratchet spanner is best as you barely get a turn on the nut for starter cable)
then remove the starter motor, needs to be rotated as its coming out sink another 2 beers
install new starter and hold in place using the bottom bolt (its easier to connect the cables when starter is half in)
dick about for a while to get top bolt in..............
reverse the process and your back in business......
Found this after I finished which would have been easier and probably cause less creaking at the front strut area..............

Seems easy reading it back but its a nightmare on stands...... lift would be alot easyier
After road test, plug in the VAG and check for codes, all was good for me

Re: anyone changed a starter motor???
Cam belt, water pump etc about 10 hours, be half the time next time:-) wasn't too bad a job with the bar and puller for cam sprockets
Starter was probably 5 hours spanner turning and 2 days worrying how to do it
Wipers are next as they slow again...... Oil not helped much.
Happy with the car again tho, as long as it doesnt rain ....
