Harro! New flame fodder with a few ICE questions pweese!

Post by Mr Footlong » Fri Nov 18, 2011 6:42 pm

Evening all

I have been lurking on here for a few weeks as quite frankly I had nothing to say that would have been of any use to anyone whatsoever but despite searching/googling everything to within an inch of its life I find myself needing some help/insults thrown/mild petting from the folks in the know on here!

I have been driving overpowered nuttermobiles for as long as I can remember now but while I thought my old XJR was a bit of a pig to do any ICE modding to, this girl (2003 RS6 Avant) is making me feel like a total numpty. I used to do all the wiring/engine/ICE modding on all my old Rice Rockets as it was easy as anything to get panels etc off but at 34 years of age and a very technical brain in my head, this German over-engineering has me totally flummoxed. I have barely managed to get the old phone out from the armrest to stick a DAB unit in there and forget pulling the wiring out as I can't figure out how to remove any panel without snapping it!

Baaaasically, I would like to remove the RNS-D (that I have already gone and bought the latest nav disc for, tv tuner aux input module and Kufatec SD/USB addon on module for, well played sir...) and go down the RNS-E route. I was considering jacking it all in and fitting in a Sony double din with Tomtom etc built in but after actually using the Audi Satnav, I love the info in the DIS that comes up so want to stick with an Audi head unit. I am guessing that most people tend to stick with them for this reason?

I have come across 2 sites that seem to really be in to this, http://www.tclsatnav.com and http://www.vwcruise.com - have any of you had dealings with either or know of any better/cheaper people to provide and install a RNS-E upgrade, maybe with Bluetooth and an aux input for the DAB? I came across a chap call NHN on the Audi-Sport forums that appears to be near god-like on there from others but he doesn't seem to have a website, I have to have 15 posts to PM him and my attempt to send him a temp email address to contact me on was deleted before even being posted so getting a bit narked off with bothering on there ;)

I am getting a Calearo DAB aerial installed regardless of what I end up putting in but do you guys think I am going down the right route with an RNS-E, Bluetooth and Aux in or should I be looking at an aftermarket job since I am fearing this is going well in to 4 figure territory?

Thanks in advance and looking forward to any replies/piss-taking :jump:

Nick.

Lol, well, you guys had one or 2 people come on from threads I read that seemed just downright rude and unfriendly so I thought I would try a different approach. I take it the slightly kiss-ass/mentally unhinged approach isn't generating any humour/desire to help me out? I'll be a good gimp and get back in my box then!

Get back in the box and remove the gimp mask ASAP as there are some on here that might fancy that scene :ban:

Rsne isn't the cheapest option and yes your right it will cost 4 figs to buy and fit but it is the best way as it is fully integrated into the audi system including the dis working :bigwave:

Hi Mr. Footlong.

Erm. Thank god your avatar isn't too weird...

RNS-E is the one that in my opinion looks like it's meant to be in the dash.

I love the SD card music playback, the Nav discs have Audi dealers with phone numbers in the special destinations menu (veery handy) and as you say the DIS read-out is useful.

Oh - and...(can't believe I'm beating BamBam to it) - F.O.N.

I've dealt with Nigel (NHN) over there, bought my VCDS off of him. Do you want me to get him to contact you? Oh and by the way F.O.N. :)

Amanda, I paid about £500 for my RNSE in my old car, £70 for cables and four hours later I was on my way.

It is plug and play on the C5 RS 6, you might need a kufatec adaptor but that should be it. If you need Vag Com coding a local member will do it for you.

Thanks guys, I was thinking about gambling it and getting something second hand off Ebay etc but to be perfectly honest I want this to be a totally spot on job so just thought I would pay someone to get it all spot on first time. Amar, I take it you bought yours off Ebay etc? I have VCDS but again, I would just save myself the flaff and the fitter would get it all programmed right for me is the theory.

If pictures do it for you  then I will do in a few days but she is in for a detail on Monday followed by mechanic work on Tues/Wed so will be some time after that, I also have to fit the slightly rude private plate back on. She is running on 18's and still has DRC, I feel dirty.

Bilko1, thank for your offer and I have sent you a PM. Anybody know where NHN is physically located or has anyone else had dealings with either of the companies I mentioned in the original post?

Not knowing what F.O.N. means and only finding the Urban Dictionary version, I have come to assume that it must stand for Full Of Nubiles ;)

Cheers,

Nick.

I've yet to see an aftermarket stereo that looks right in the RS6. If you must upgrade then RNS-E is probably the way. It will cost a bomb to get it all done for you though, including bluetooth and stuff. If you're a bit handy then you can do it yourself. Plenty of tutorials for upgrading from RNS-D to E out there. I've got a couple in case you can't find what you're looking for.

I wonder what you could get a new RNS-E from TPS for.

Shop - an RNS E is £1800 from Audi and you get £3-400 back if you give them your old unit. I got mine from Lithunia, it was here the next day.

rnse nav is shockingly <beep>, i only keep it because of the dis and the oem looks, it would have been binned long ago if not for that, it costs far too much to add bluetooth and aux stuff to it, you could buy an aftermarket unit that will actually get you to your destination without going round the houses and has far more features but no dis,

so i keep it and will pay to upgrade :(

no touchsreen either and the postcode imput is painfull
