Clutch return-pipe renewal - UPDATE

Post by Timster » Thu Oct 06, 2011 6:50 pm

Is this a big job?
Should it be under warranty do you reckon?

I hear it's a cheap part but needs a lot of hours.
Cheers

Mate,
It was cheap and took 1.5 hrs at MRC.

Why are you having it done?

Ello Ello...

Interesting... the stealer suggested many hours of work, because of where it routes. (fancy that).

I'm finding that if I'm pushing the RS and doing rapid gear changes (especially 2nd-3rd-2nd), the clutch isn't returning back up quick enough.
At first I thought I was just making a cock of it..... but pretty sure now that it's the clutch not returning... and not me missing gears :bigblink:

Was this one of "the problems you had"... that needed a re-visit?

Would people consider this a warranty job, or not worth the hassle if Independents can do it in 90 mins.

The car's in Dealers next week for MOT and rear DRC.... so make sense to have a look at the C.R.P. if under warranty.

Mine was done under warranty, though my clutch was stuck down and never came back up.

They changed the pipe, only to discover it was infact the clutch plate had broken. So i got a new clutch as well.

Point is, they changed the pipe first, under warranty, along with the slave cylinder.

Yours in on the way out too then?

They're the early symptoms me, Sonny and others had before it finally stuck to the floor on Watford ring road! Had mine replaced but it was kinked and a seal had been broken, lost fluid and stuck to the floor. I took it to Amersham and there was another pipe from the master (I think) cylinder that was causing problems. Had that replaced (also cheap) too in August this year and I've had no problems since. It still doesn't feel quite right but no sign of it sticking down.

I said yours felt the same as mine when I drove yours didn't I?

Sachs, single mass is on my Christmas pressie list.

Let me know how you get on mate?

Should be a recall IMHO!

Right. Cheers guys.
Deffo going to speak to them tomorrow and see what's what re warranty.

Motorway driving and pootlin' about everything seems ok. As soon as I give it some, the problem starts.
Seems consistent with what you've experienced then.

Yep, exactly the same.
I found it worse when changing down after giving it some.

RECALL, RECALL, RECALL, RACALL.

Go on Tim, give em some stick tomorrow and get us all sorted.

Better still, get yours done under warranty and they've set a president then.

Having said that I don't think it's as simple as just pipe work.

I have the same problem with the clutch sticking about half way when I'm changing gear quickly. Audi say it's not a warranty or a recall and quoted me:-

Parts - <£100
Labour @ 4 - 5 hours

Total (approx) £650.

I decided to leave it although if anybody knows the parts or part numbers that have to be changed I can get somebody to do it for me?

I didn't get the part numbers Daz as MRC did mine.

The clutch slave hydraulic line adapter is £15.55+vat and it is around 1.5 hours@£68+vat plus some clutch fluid to fit and bleed.

Anyone quoting you 4-5 hours is properly taking the piss!

Should be... if it's "all component" cover and purchased through Audi.

Re: Clutch return-pipe renewal - UPDATE

Righto.... all done. Dealer had car for a few days (but admitted that work took less than a full day). They wanted the car just to be sure there was plenty of time etc (also, I had a loan... so no sweat).

Based on the info I posted: http://forum.rs246.com/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=93492

The Clutch Pressure Pipe was replaced.
Shagga, it's not 1.5 hours work because they need to lower one end of the gearbox... for starters. Also, I get the impression that the entire length of the pipe has been replaced by the new/modified part (and not just the adapter that MRC did on yours). One of the expressions that I kept hearing was "blistering" !
This, I believe is an actual heat-blistering of the hydraulic pipe due to it's proximity to the engine.
It's too early to say if this repair has cured the problem... as I've only had the car back this evening (and most of that involved having another IM in the boot, so was driving sensibly.... but that's another story).
Certainly feels ok so far. Still got the weird notchiness near the top of the clutch... but then they all have... so that's just a design issue, I guess.

Hopefully I'll get the chance to get some heat into it tomorrow and see what happens.

Good news is.... as mentioned in other thread "This IS a known and documented issue with Audi" Therefore I see no reason why anybody should have to pay for this repair if the fault arises.

Well done Tim, yes this will be covered under warranty if it fails. Mine failed in 2009 while driving through France, not good.
