Buying B7 RS4 advice, pls be gentle :)

Post by SteveG » Sun Oct 02, 2011 7:25 pm

I am looking at something fun that will not lose too much cash upto about 22k. Some of you may remember I owned a 6 for a while, have been missing it since, so looked at Audi again as an option. Couldn;t think of much else that looks as sexy and has a good following for the price..

Anyway..

Found this one on sale at the Main dealer in Norwich

http://www.audi.co.uk/used-cars/used-ca ... c=se_na_re_

1. What does everyone think of it?

2. How can you tell if it has factory Bluetooth fitted?
(The RNSE) has been removed from the car, but although it says that it has bluetooth prep in the spec sheet, the sales guy said that it didn't. I would believe him, but the spec also only mentions the rear parking sensors, but the car actually has both front and rear sensors..

3. Also I went to see it today, and don't think it has been moved for a few days. I started it up and there was a cloud of white smoke on start and intial gentle revving. I only let it idle for a minute or so and the smoke did get less. Is this normal?

4. Next question is,,,I tried pressing the sport button, and the car didn't sound any different when Idling, there was a slight sound difference in exhaust note when revving it however. Is that normal, as I was expecting even at idle the sound to change on pressing the sport button

5. Final question is, the car is an April 2006 and covered 60k miles. Are there any big expenses around the corner (outside warranty) that I should expect?

Steve,

Bad news - it's sold. I rang for it on Saturday. The further bad news is the Bath car is also sold, the good news is that I collect it next week =)

It has the "optional" 18" wheels, which hardly anyone likes so I would negotiate hard on this point alone or budget to fit 19s before selling on.

Lucky guy, I put a deposit on the one I am asking about. :biggrin2:

Do they all have 'sports Chassis' as standard? is that different from 'Sports Suspension Plus' ?

aha! so it's sold to YOU!! Congratulations, looked like a very good value car - I would have been hot on your heels!

Sports suspension plus is different from the sports suspension that is standard - lower by 10mm and slightly stiffer. Re. exhaust valve, I belive it's closed in neutral, and 1,2,3 below 3 or 4k rpm. Open all the time in 4,5 and 6 (or so I have read). There is a sticky at the top of this board that tells you how to check the valve operation.

I'm sure the experts know a lot more, although I now own one, I've not actually spent a full hour in RS4's yet =)

I'll amend FAQ as doesn't specifically mention neutral - exhaust valve is open in neutral at idle and above 4k as per gears 1-3.
You should most definitely hear a change. If not go have a look at the exhausts with the sport mode on at idle.should be obviously open.

Best option for checking factory fit options is to find the build Sticker - usually in the front pag of e service book or in the spare wheel well. A few other places too. There's plenty of online de peers for the three character option codes used by Audi

Thanks adsgreen

I will get the dealer to fix that before I collect. The exhaust was more noticeble with the button pressed, but only when I compared during revving. There was no difference when it was idling, and i was pressing the button on./ off.

Steve, regarding the smoky start up, I believe this is common to most RS4s - mine certainly does it and whilst it looks bloody awful, it does go away as soon as the car starts to warm through. It's usually accompanied by feeling and sounding a bit rough when cold and a bit of 'kangarooing' at low speeds. As I said, once she starts to warm up a bit all this disappears. Apparently the cure is a free software upgrade from Audi from SW0080 to SW0090, although I haven't bothered with mine yet. There is plaenty of info on this issue on this board.

It does take a second or so for the vacuum to build up to move thenvalves.

My valves most certainly open at idle - in the garage I can actually hear them open.

This car has been for sale for ages, it has the wrong alloys on, it has a high mileage and i notice they have put a "THIS MILEAGE IS NOT VERIFIED" Sticker on, was this on when you viewed the car ?
It has been reduced month after month, see how much discount they would give you off a set of 19" seven spoke alloys and tyres, to seal a deal
Are they offering any sort of warranty ?

I looked at this as well. Didn't like the wheels or the fact that the RNS-E is hanging out...

Dealers always remove RNSE if the car is parked outside overnight.

Where was that April 2006 Daytona on 18s first registered? To an Audi dealer like Oaks or Oakfield? Recall a mate test driving an early Daytona saloon on 18s it when it was new with a plate along the lines of R5 0AKS (R 50 AKS). I might have a pic on home PC somewhere.
