Wot no spankin?
Re: Wot no spankin?
Monoi, I am with you on that one.
In August, I did nearly exactly the same route as you doing the N85 (Route Napoleon) and then D21/D25 (a shorter but also a great country road)...had a whole load of fun. At first I had a few white knuckle overtakes of caravans and their obligatory tail of citroens but once I got comfortable with what the car could do on that road, God did I have fun. I have to say that we had to stop early for lunch due to all my passengers feeling car sick!!! Would love to do it again especially out of season...
Have to say that that day's drive was far more fun than the day before where I spent the whole day pelting down the Peage...the sole highlight being a bit of cat and mouse with a GB reg'd M5 where we both nodded mutual respect at around 138!
One thing which all the passengers mentioned was how much better the ride was in France than in the UK (i have H&R). The state of our roads is appalling.
PS. Anyone going to France should really get a Liber-T badge. I got one for the first time this year and whizzing through the tolls makes the whole thing far more pleasurable...

Re: Wot no spankin?
I drove through France into Spain summer last year, just before leaving I had a 4 wheel geo done by Wheels in Motion. I asked them to set up the Bilstein's for fast road (big error). The ride quality in Europe was amazing but when returning to the UK it near shook my teeth loose, with the front-end skipping out at times! I pulled the wheels off to find they'd set it to 1 at the front and 6 for the rear, I reset it to 4s all-round. You're right though, some of the UK roads are truly dismal, it must be way easier to live with coilovers on mainland Europe.Mrfickle wrote:One thing which all the passengers mentioned was how much better the ride was in France than in the UK (i have H&R). No matter where you go, there you are.

Re: Wot no spankin?
Passengers?!? Poor souls! I do this trip every year, and the family flies out the week before. There would be mayhem in the car otherwise! As I am on my own with no time pressure, I take all the small roads and as many mountain passes as possible (although last year, I took the col de la bonnette, highest in europe, and the road going down is really steep with the mountain falling away forever, with no barriers. As I am not too keen on height, the descent was very slow until reaching tree level and I was cursing myself for being there!Mrfickle wrote: In August, I did nearly exactly the same route as you doing the N85 (Route Napoleon) and then D21/D25 (a shorter but also a great country road)... I second the peage thing, got it before going and what a difference it makes (especially on the way down with no passengers!)Mrfickle wrote: PS. Re: Wot no spankin?
I was travelling up the M6 toll late one night last month, and came across a rather new looking Bentley Conti GT ....... all I can say is that it is a very strange experinence feeling like you are going backwards at 150 !!!
He absolutely flew past me and must have got close to 180 at a guess ...... its the fisrt time my S4 felt quite flat footed
Apart from that I find not many wanting a blast these days and I think thats because with these types of cars you only really come up agaisnt vehicles who like yourself can achieve break neck (literally) and serious licence loosing speeds, so many drivers of the older variety often think second of it as 'we' tend to have more to loose I suppose.
I think I'm suggesting we are all getting older
..... anyway why dont I live closer to the M6 !!

When you get near the top, you can either go all the way there for sightseeing, or turn left (if you're going towards Nice) across the ridge, and head back down.Mrfickle wrote:Just google mapped Col de La Bonette...looks awesome!!!!
I thought "no way I'm going up there" so I turned left, and my heart sank when I saw where I had to drive down! I was testing the brakes every 10 metres...(I wasn't in the audi though).

Re: Wot no spankin?
Not a spanking but that Fezza was not going to get away from me!

Re: Wot no spankin?
Not truly a spankin'.... But my girlfriend (clearly without encouragement) managed to top mine out to 280 KPH. Didnt feel there was a great deal left in her (the car not the girlfriend) after that.
Cant remember exactly what we passed on the way and may not have even recognised anything, but I can confirm nothing passed on the left hand side.

Re: Wot no spankin?
I managed 182mph on the day (293kph) and I am sure it would keep going but not bad in 1.5mi. You really pay for the Quattro transmission losses at top end speed.
