Fuel Pump assistance please..

Post by GaryCollinson » Mon Sep 05, 2011 8:13 am

Guys, following a ten day vacation and a fuel top-up my 2004 RS6 has been showing symptoms of fuel starvation. Really lumpy and a struggle over 2000 RPM.

Ive had a recommended garage take a look at it and they have diagnosed the problem to be the fuel pump. They have advised I replace the fuel pump assembly, fuel filter and the spark plugs.

Only problem is they have given me a quote of the equivalent of 750 UK Pounds (I live in Dubai). The majority of the cash is for the actual fuel pump, almost 450 UK pounds.

Im going to contact a few UK dealers today and see what the cost is including shipping (fortunately I wont have to pay TAX). Can anybody give me some idea how much I should be looking at for a fuel pump in the UK?

Also, im unable to see any record of a cam belt change at 60,000 KM in the history (worried!) Can anybody give me rough estimation on parts cost in the UK also?

Any help appreciated.

Gary

Have you got any other symptoms? Fuel pump problems are unlikely. How did they diagnose it? Did they pressure test?

If you drive with the fuel filler cap off, does it still do it? I had a problem like yours once (on an M3), it turned out to be a blocked carbon canister.

Also, there are 2 fuel pumps in the RS6. One is a pre-supply pump located inside the fuel tank and the other is the main pump that provides the pressure. They are also variable supply, controlled by a control unit.

Which pump are they saying is faulty?

THe pre-supply pump is (very approximately) about £250 and the main pump is about £350. Part numbers 4B0 906 087BF and 4B0 901 089A respectively.

Hi Shoppinit,

They have said that it is the internal pump. I also had the engine light come on but I didnt get a chance to check the codes before I put it in. As I understand it they have done a pressure test.

Anything I can ask to confirm the issue or get them to double check?

Thanks for the advice and the part numbers.

It's fairly easy to check the fuel delivery rate if you're willing to get messy :) Depends how hands on you are. The pump must be able to deliver at least 1 liter in 30 seconds.

Also, I am fairly sure you can check fuel pressure from the Vagcom.

The question is, if they change the pump and it's not that, then will they charge you? :)

Try running with your fuel tank vented to atmosphere breifly to see if that makes any difference.

Ha ha, like getting messy but unfortunately im mechanically retarded and would be the one with odd nuts, bolts and thingys in a pool on the floor!

The car is currently at the workshop so I will ask some "informed" questions on how certain they are it is the fuel pump. Im assuming they have a Vagcom which will hopefully show the lack of pressure and appropriate codes.

I need to check with them regarding misdiagnosing and me footing the bill for their tinkering..

I will keep you updated with happenings. Thanks again
