It had already been changed prior to me buying the car.
The cd changer does look the same as the one that was fitted to my 1999 S4 that I had before. Hmm

There must be someone who has done a RNS-E upgrade that can tell us if the RNS-D cd changer is retained or not.

I would go for the RNS-E version because in any case the xcarlink can go between the head unit and the kufatec adapter (if necessary). As far as the xcarlink is concerned you have an RNS-E with a CD changer on it.

I am certainly no expert on ICE, but found this when trawling through ebay:

I have no idea if this is suitable, but from the application list, looks like it may be a cheaper alternative to the xlink (but you may want to ensure it will work first).

Problem is you lose your CD changer and you can't control the ipod from the MFSW or headunit. Plus if it's coming from outside europe you'll end up paying more in duty and VAT than the xcarlink.

The only downside of them is that you only see cd and song numbers instead of the names. that what they told me...
if so, you'll have to make a note on your frontscreen with which numbers correspond with a song/cd name....
If you can't go to the track, bring the track to you.

There is no real solution to this with the RNS-D unless you are willing to lose your CD player and try to source an old denison gateway.

Personally, it doesn't bother me at all. I have about 5 days worth of music in mine and I just put it on random selection. When I get to a track I can't be bothered listening to, I just skip it. If I want to see what it was, I look at the iphone.

If I want to listen to something in particular, then I just select it on the iphone.

I take it back - looks like not even the denison can do it with RNS-D.

There is another alternative, but more complicated. You could use an ipod controller that has an AV output and remote control and connect it to the tuner so you get the info on the screen. However, having tried the ipod through the aux inputs I can tell you that the sound quality is nowhere near as good.

This could be a budget solution if you're not that fussed about sound quality. I initially hooked up my ipod through the tuner. You need a £15 adapter and to run some wire to the front of the car to plug into the headphone socket of your iphone / ipod. I also had to put in a ground loop isolator for about £10 because I was getting interference.

This is what I did in mine and soldered my own wire: 2x RCA tuner side and headphone jack socket that I plumbed into the car. That way I can plug anything into the headphone socket and have it come out of the car speakers. Haven't used it since I installed the xcarlink, but it's still there in case I need it. The aux input is circled and the xcarlink cable has an arrow pointing at it.

I was looking into this and could not find any equipment to give the info on the RNS-E screen. Have you found one?

I did mess around trying to discover if the newer style AMI set up (available on factory ordered A3 and TT with RNS-E) could be fitted but it means the latest gen RNS-E head unit and mega expense.

If you have RNS-E then you could try a Denison Gateway 100 with GW16AC1. Doesn't specifically say it works for the A6 platform, but does for the TT and A3 with RNS-E.

Looks like only shows the info in the DIS though, not the headunit. Not much use.

There is this, which is what I was hinting at earlier with the full AV integration:

I quite like that - do you know if it works when the car begins to move as I would have thought TV/motion could blank the screen?

I suspect you have to get the TV in motion mod done.

I upgraded to RNS-E myself and retained the original 6CD changer in the boot. Of course, it never got any use because of the SD cards up front, but it did work.
